Detachable Tow Bar Stowage

Looking at the handbook the detachable towbar should stow in the left rear hatch in a special bracket... I bought a bar with a bracket but it won't fit.. in my rear hatch I have pipes and fans probably for the rear air con.. when this was fitted where was the towbar stored?

Still fitted in the same place, just a bit more awkward to fit if you have the rear aircon. Mine was fitted by the factory but was replaced by the dealer as the strap was broken.

its a very tight fit - but there should be some polystyrene it fits into.

I just leave mine attached or in the boot - its just too much of a pain to try and fit it back in

The two bolt holes are under the side trim. It kind of slots between carpet & boot floor
I am sure there were some fitting instructions for it on the owner info web site.
Just went to have a look, but site seems to have gone!! Rolling Eyes
Just posted a new topic to ask in anyone knows where it has moved to...
Someone may be along who has downloaded them...
 Cheers Ian

I bought one of these from the Large One and it came with fitting instructions. It is a standard LR accessory. I do remember that for a model with the fan quite a lot of the side trim needed to be removed for fitting. I fiited mine with less challenge as I do not have a fan there. My model is an 05 S, I thought that the HSEs had this storgae option as standard?
Without the fan being in the way I use it without a problem; its worth noting the problems associated with leaving the detachable bar on all the time, it seems to get 'stuck' very easily!

It is standard if the tow bar is fitted at the factory IIRC.

My 08 with rear air con doesn't have the holder so I wrap mine in a blanket and lob it in the empty space (when it is not just left on) on the basis it is safe, I know where it is and I also have a spare blanket in the car if I ever needed it

I wonder how much protection this really offers. It might be better to suffer damage to the bumper that is designed to crumple and be replaced rather than transfer the forces into the structure of the car. This might be stronger but if is were damaged then repairs might be more difficult.

Couple of photos of the tow bar storage fitted to a D3 with rear aircon

My tow bar stays in the garage as it will not fit in this anymore as it has a MaxxRaxx clamp attached to it.

On a bit of a tangent here. You have the fans for rear aircon in the side panel. Where are the vents? I thought they were in the headlining console thingy? If they are how does the cold air reach up there or is it plumbed into the vents on the back of the cubby box?
More importantly is it a retro fit without part ex of my kidneys? Rolling with laughter

You do not need to remove side plastic trim, it can br fittrd without, from memory remove rear N/S tie down eye. Carpet/trim will then lift to expose two holes, juggle bracket through opening in side trim and then slide it under side trim until holes in bracket line up with those in boot floor. About 20 minutes or less Thumbs Up

Shocked Shocked . That's not an easy/cheap retro fit then.

OK, move along back to tow bar storage.

Adrian, Thanks for the diagram Thumbs Up
