I have purchased a used det towball for my MY 07 discovery, it is the right one, ie RRS & Discovery.
It arrived with no keys but appears to be in the unlocked position, when I push it into the slot it will not go fully home by about 1 cm, There are no obstructions in the hole, any ideas please.

If there is no key in then it is in the locked position as the key will only come out when locked 
suggest you get hold of the seller and get the key or your money back !!! Duncan

Hi Duncan
Read on here that you can get the key out even when the ball is off the car, I can pull out the knob and turn it fully but it seems to hit something up inside, had a look and there appear to be nothing stopping it.
There is a bright steel 'tit' on the towball that pulls out and springs back, I have given it a good soak with WD, other than that the ball looks brand new & unused.

you can get the key out if you fool it into thinking its been installed. Im fairly certain that you'll still need the key to unlock it so you can insert it properly, unless someone can show me otherwise.
If you can take a photo and post it up we can have a look. Im off to london now  be back online tonight but i'm sure someone else can assist in the meantime Duncan

But he would have needed the key to remove it from the old car ????????. When I use mine you need the key to cock the the unit ready for insertion, once you locate it fully home the key should spin round then you can pull the key out.
You can get the key out from the tow hitch if you knock the little silver pin on the hitch, this is what I do to remove my key because they are so fragile that they easy break, I have only one left for mine.

Whatever - you need the key.
I'd be chasing the seller for the key, or if it was a real bargain, have a word with "The Large One" who might be able to sort the key issue out for you.
Or if your on first name terms with your dealer, they might have a spare

Thanks for all your help, its sorted.
Like you said, I fitted a new barrel and it works fine, the key has a hinge now that lets it fold flat against the barrel. As suggested, you push the silver 'tit' in after you remove the hitch, you can remove the key.

PS, whats the black dome thingy in the center of the roof at the rear, car os a 2007 xs with pti.

I've read this thread on insertion of the detachable towbar & removing the key when it's NOT in situ with interest - after just having bought TWO of the damn things - after my wife & I both accidentally bid for different ones on EBay on the same day ...& both won! ho hum.
I have fooled the towbar into thinking it's in situ by pushing the small stainless steel "tit" & can now remove the key.
As many will know, when you do this, the large stainless steel fob shoots out of the front of the tow bar to lock it into position on the car. But now, I can't seem to find out how to pull that fob back in & keep it in so I can push the towbar into position. I can pull the green plastic chuck round anticlockwise & the steel fob retracts. but I can't make it stay in by use of the key, & when I simply hold the fob in by turning the green chuck & then "2offer" the tow bar to the socket, the stainless steel fob does not seem to be retracted into the body of the towbar far enough for it to clear the metal in the "socket" to allow it to click into place.
I can't tell whether I'm being dense or whether the towbar is inherently faulty & therefore I'm on a loser.
I guess I may have to wait until the second one arrives & hope that it's easier or maybe even has instructions - this one arrived wrapped in nothing more than bubble wrap!
Anyone any suggestions or copy of the instructions that you could reproduce or fax to me (0121-382-9576) for attn of Dr Clay.

I think you may be omitting to pull the green knob 'outwards' before you try to turn it, try it, it should retract the plunger thingy fully then.
