difficulty starting my discovery

I have had difficulty starting my discovery
Thinkig glow plugs. Any way charged Battery up over 12 hours on tricle
Came to start it and on 3 cranks it started. Left it a couple of hours and same 3 cranks and started
I decided to spray a little wd40 around inside engine compartment with damp weather and having bonnet open
Come to start it next morning and 3 cranks and it started up but cut straight out as though a lack of fuel
It has been doing this since
Any ideas lads as to what it is. have i cocked job up with the wd 40 somehow
When the engine cuts out i can hear something rotating down side where battery is.

Who knows.

Bad fuel pump ?
Bad fuel filter ? Try draining water off the bottom of filter ?

Guesses

Get the FBH running in advance of starting, see if that helps (therefore pointing to glow plugs possibly)

Battery OK?

As Pete K says, guesses.

Any codes recorded?

Have you got sufficient fuel in the tank. Check whether there is fuel at the Schrader valve

This morning 5 inches snow.
Recap
Tried to start engine yesterday and after 3 crank fired up but cut out as though no fuel
Tried later same
So engineering practice go back through what i did
I charged battery up and on 3 cranks engine started
Then i sprayed Wd 40 around sensors and switches
Next daycome to start and it started and cut out
So could be wd40
Today i put hairdrier on and gave all wiring and sensors ,switches good heating
Came to start up and on 3 rd crank fired up and it was about to cut out but suddenly kicked up
Run it a while up to normal temp then switched off. Half hour tried again and it fired up
So did i disturb something with wd 40
So at present it is starting
Will try again in morning as weather is atrocious up here

as I said previously,
if you have an electrical meter, check resistance of glowplugs

I have gone out and cleaning bonnet off etc to get in i tried the car after 4 turnovers it started up
After clearing snow to give it a short run i noticed diesel stains on the driveway under car
So i am now thinking the theory given of Fuel filter etc could be right this could be fuel starvation when it startec and cut out ???
6 months ago i had a new fuel filter fitted. The following week i had to take it in as fuel leaking
They had not fitted the filter right. I think they have not done it right again. probably clip ons not right
Will get it in Monday and at same time test glow plugs. I am now thinking fuel
Cheers lads
