Disabling ratcheting seat belts - possible? |
|
My daughter sits in a forward facing ISOFIX seat, and whilst being 'helpful' pulled all the belt out then released it. It ratcheted back until it had caught under the arm of her seat, then stopped. Problem is, in this position it's near impossible to free the belt - to release the ISOFIX fixings needs some slack in the belt and it would only tighten; catch 22.
I was lucky this time, as I gave it some brute force and ignorance treatment and eventually managed to twist the seat enough to release it, but I'm not sure if I'll be lucky next time as just another couple of mm of belt retracted would have stuffed me.
Anyone know if it's possible to turn off the 'only tightens' ratchet system in the seatbelts? Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Transgenic tomato anyone?

If its the same concept as in the Freelander, then no.....
Had to take one apart on the wifes Freelander when we tried to fit the car seat for number 3 boy just before Xmas and found it was 4-6cm's short in going around the car seat.
The design prevents this from happening, and i guess in an accident this is just what you need.

Thanks Craig, I was afraid of that. When it comes to securing static loads the ratchet is very useful; I just wish there was a piece of string to pull that would dis-engage the ratchet to release it. Dr. Ian Malcolm:

What I need is something like that blue meanie, but that does the opposite and works to prevent the last 6 inches coming out - it's only when the belt is all the way out of the reel that the ratchet is activated.
Edit : Just thought your idea through - looks like it could be an option as it would prevent the seatbelt being drawn through the eye mounted on the child seat. Only downside of that is that by doing that it might affect how the acceleration lock on the reel works during an accident. Dr. Ian Malcolm:

yes but if you were to put the stopper at a length that still allowed you to move it away from the child seat so it could then be unclipped and allowed to retract in fully, then it woould do the same, no?
edit: don't know if that would affect the operation I'm afraid and theeeeennn......???

Yep, you're right - If I put it on the child side of the child seat eye then it won't affect it in an accident, but will prevent the belt fully tightening if it ratcheted. Doesn't stop the ratchet, but does stop it mattering.

we've had the same happen in ours but as the child seat is not an isofix one, you can just move it out of the way,
still happens at the most awkward times though! and theeeeennn......???
