Discovery 3 rear brake pipe replacement guide
Hi everyone, one of my rear brake pipes bust this afternoon on the discovery 3 ☹️please could someone give me some advice or guide on how to replace and how straight forward the whole process will be? Will I need to remove exhaust or other parts to access/replace them or can this be done without removing other components on the vehicle.
Also, can I just purchase a rear brake pipe kit that will have all the pipes already bent to shape with the pipes flared and nuts etc?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi
Ouch, bet that was frightening , here’s a few links
There’s also some other links, just search for rear brake pipes, plus from what I’ve read many have just bought a roll of kunifer brake pipe and bent / flared it all themselves
Will also need to buy a flaring tool to flare the steel pipe, the pre bent kits are steel and I believe if they’re used the body needs to be removed, so that’s why many just use kunifer
I’ve personally replaced the rear brakes hoses but not the brake pipes, theres 3 x each side
Also ref brake fluid Ur need Dot 4 class 6 , plus if u allow air to enter the ABS module i believe u need diagnostic to help bleed it , but more knowledgeable members will be able to confirm that for u
Hope that helps

[DOT 6]
I understand it's DOT4, class 6, which the Comma DOT 4 ESP claims to meet.
This type of flaring tool works well in the confined space under the car:

GStuart, thanks for the helpful links and brake pipe set. I think it could be possible the pipes displayed is one of the offending pipes that has burst as it look like it was weeping passenger's side rear just after the Felxi, which luckily went pop whilst I was under the vehicle doing a rewind on the rear parking brake module, gave the missus a laugh 😂 Although was a bit cautious bringing off the ramps as it was out and spongy as I came off then I just backed it up left it there, so hopefully I haven't got any air in the system, fingers crossed 🤞
Hopefully I can get away just replacing the flexis and pipes you have show in the kiy, if that is the case, are these pretty straightforward to replace and will I still need a diagnostic kit to bleed?
Thanks.

Obviously, brake pipes/hoses should be replaced before they fail. Part of MOT brake test is to press the brake pedal as hard as possible, which would have probably resulted in the same leak.
You should carefully check the long brake pipes which run from rear flexi joints to the front, before they go under cover of heatshields. May be a good idea to arrange an MOT after the brake repairs.Chris

Hi
No probs and great it helped
I done mine when I replaced my rear wishbones, was easy until I got where the top flexi hose connected onto the ridged pipe, the nut wouldn't undo , therefore had to cut the nut off and reflare it with a bubble type joint
Used the similar type of flaring tool as per @highlands link, worked perfectly , I just bought 4.75 Din, I believe they are virtually identical to the 3/16 didn’t need diagnostics as I put some clingfilm and the cap back on the brake master cylinder to prevent fluid from escaping and therefore keeping enough in the system
I then removed the cling film after replacing front and rear hoses then used a vacuum bleeder to change the entire systems brake fluid
Apologises as I made a mistake regarding the brake fluid , it’s dot 4 class 6
When u get new brake hoses and the small intermediate brake pipe I also fitted new stainless steel hose securing clips and new brake pipe nuts
Hope that helps

Excuse jumping on your thread but I’ve just been wuoted £400/500 to replace both rear pipes. Is that reasonable?

Assuming it is the full front to back set then yes. Landrover say it is a body off job! Normally people do it with the body still on (unless they are taking it off for some other reason) but it is fiddly.

They did say LR recommend body off but they said they would cut the pipes in the middle and that was the quote £400/500.

In that case the price doesn't seem unreasonable. I presume they are not re-fitting steel pipes? It beggars belief that LR fitted steel in the first place given how inaccessible they are to change. Go for copper/nickel and you can fit/forget for the life of the car, also it is much easier to flare/join/shape than steel.

I did mine last month just before mot. Used halfords parts and flair kit and all fine. The join is around the back door area under the heat shield.
All in it cost 60quid.. Previous owner paid 200 for drivers side 3years ago.
I've got enough copper pipe left to replace everything pretty much.. And unions..
If you buy or own an older car it can be really uneconomical if you can't do this or other jobs yourself.
My ns follows the original pipe using original pipe clips to body.
