Dying gearbox!
It's dying a slow and painful death. Started with not engaging 5th gear very well. Now the TC is slipping under heavy load, and the TC cannot cope with the torque of the engine. It goes from being locked, to unlocked under heavy acceleration.
Took a few logs for you all
Full throttle in 4th gear, into 5th, then 6th
Full throttle in 6th only
"Limped" it for 25,000 miles. Not gonna last much longer My D3 Build Thread

done some delving in to a gearbox last week and that seems terminal fault codes p0730 & p0735 incorrect gear ratio,s , drops in to limp mode every few miles when feathering the throttle in 4 and 5 gear
so going for a rebuild next week at a reasonable price
Look at the solenoid pressures - 5 and 6 as they are also relevant to the locking or not of the TC.Mark.

If you keep the throttle pressed after the TC unlocks itself, it will log a trans fault, for incorrect gear ratio. Makes for interesting overtaking...
I know it's dead. Just hoped for another 6 months out of it My D3 Build Thread

New gearbox? So that nice shiny new exhaust you picked up will come in handy Defender 90 CSW MY06

p0730 & p0735 relate to the solenoid valves - depending on your rebuilder, they may have to replace the mechatronic unit, though the solenoids are available if you know where to look apparently.
The latter I think is pretty common and can be caused by the band clutches being at full adjustment I think.
According to the manual I have relating to the gearbox, P0730 is a general gear ratio fault and P0735 is a 5th gear fault, very helpfully the cure is to check oil level and if that is ok change the transmisson Mark.

How many miles is the gearbox known to have done on original oil? Any use of Dr Tranny? Whats the mileage now?

115k on original oil.
Oil and filter done at same time as replacement engine, but was never entirely happy with the gear change. Was always a bit clunky and slow to change
Remap was done at 125k, and highlighted the fact the gearbox had bigger issues than just a poor gear change...My D3 Build Thread

Changed my oil at 110,000 then had judder for 1000 miles then two tubes of Dr Tranny now 118,000 and still smooth touch wood. Want to get it to 200,000 so will look at another flush and Dr tranny in say another 40,000 miles.

Sorry to hear of your trouble disco_mikey it reads exactly like the symptoms I had with my old D3. I'd put 130k miles on it going up and down the motorway when I started getting TC juddering on hills it had two mega flushes at Bristol transmissions which gave me another 20k miles and lived on DR tranny until it finally died. Was quoted 5k at a main dealer to sort it all out so chopped it in instead for a ex demonstrator there and then. Within 24hrs of recovery I was driving out the dealers with only 6k on the clock boy what a difference!
I would add I had a remap about 30k miles before the issues started, maybe not the route cause but given the way i drive maybe it put more stress on things and I regret not changing the transmission oil earlier on.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

Mikey as mentioned when you were doing a job for me. Call Mackie Transmissions in Glasgow for a quote for rebuild and TC as they are ZF authorised specialist or contact Bristol Transmissions down south. Other alternative is give Monster Junky a shout and see if they have a box available.
Also a couple of secondhand auto box on Fleabay.
