Electrical communication problems - help me!

Don't know if anyone can shed any light on this. After a 14 hour round trip yesterday and arriving home on a tow truck I'm close to wits end.

Getting intermittent faults reported. Started off with Suspension failure, ABS/EBD problem and has now escalated to a myriad of faults, I'm losing my fuel gauge, speedo and the entire dash basically - but not the touchscreen strangely.

The car has also got stuck in drive and refused to budge. But if I give it a few minutes, it seems to reset and is moveable again. It's been in with two specialists, neither can find the source of the problem, nor could what is now three AA patrolmen - although they have all said it's showing as a communication fault, clearly the car isn't developing a dozen faults simultaneously.

I've already checked for water ingress and found nothing, everything is bone dry. Really don't know where to go with this now, any suggestions will be gratefully received. Let me know if you need any more info.

Cheers guys,
Rattle

Hopefully some more expert people will be along soon but check your brake light bulbs and battery output just to ensure they are not the culprits. Have seen low battery do some very odd things to D3's.

You can reset the ECU's by disconnecting the battery and touching the battery connectors together, if you have a code reader this might help by seeing what faults appear in what order as they re-emerge.

Checked battery and brake lights, both were fine.

I do have a code reader but sadly it doesn't seem to read the faults, was only cheap. Both the AA and the local LR specialist have shown me the faults their more advanced machines have read - there doesn't seem to be any pattern to it, it just starts with a fault - which is usually, but not always either a supposed suspension or braking problem - then cascades down from there.

AA chap took the battery out and checked everything so I'm assuming so, but it's not a question I asked.

You are not a million miles from Alltrack 4x4. If you haven't already it might be worth contacting Tim McKnight there. I've only used them for an MoT so far, but impressed with how thorough they were, with no pressure to book it in with them to fix the advisories. He was happy to provide pointers for DIY fixes.

As already suggested check the earth strap to the engine, as this appears to be a common issue on the later D4s.

Regards,
Steve

Thanks, I'll give Alltrack a bell if I can't find a solution.

Sounds like a CAN BUS fault. Had any work done, however insignificant it may appear?

No, had nothing done.

Car is with a local specialist now. He's manged to replicate the fault but it happens for a split second then resets so he's unable to locate where it's coming from. He suspects it's earthing somewhere, but without being to keep the fault on, he can't locate it.

Looks like he's going to have to replace the wiring looms Big Cry

When you say earlier that you checked and there wasn’t any dampness, did you just touch the carpet and it was dry or did you lift the carpet to look at the metal floor pan? Many times water gets into the channels under the sill covers and you will never find it unless you actually lift the carpet. The looms for the car run front to back down both sides and the CAN wires run in these. I think the left side is known to cause issues so well worth checking. The insulation/sound deadening is about 1” thick so you can see why you would never find it by touching the carpet alone.
