@DN, no. Nothing has been confirmed at all. 1st garage said, "oooooo, doesn't sound good, go and see the LR pro's, they'll be quicker and wiser...", then the pro's started looking, but after my explanation, considered it very likely an engine out job. These were literally 2min chats - essentially the videos I posted.
I have not however asked anyone to spend an hour or so just looking around it. Perhaps that is some money worth spending! Thanks for the prompt. Whilst I'm a bit reluctant to drive it anywhere, I guess if it's it's , and if not, it'll survive a steady 2mile cruise!?!?!?
I'll see if they can have a look. Frustratingly, it's beyond my understanding, knowledge and confidence (and tool set) to check the sort of things I've been reading ya'll on here have looked at in situations like this.

Typical LR dealer, as soon as they see the possibility of screwing £££££££’s out of you, they immediately stop looking for anything simple Good luck Arthur, and beware of who you let investigate this. My first choice would not be a LR dealer. D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

Indeed! Although, I avoided the dealer like the plague. The guys I saw were very good considering - they're a local independent LR specialist, not part of JLR at all (well, I'm pretty sure not anyway! ) They were very sympathetic, had two guys looking around it, although only for 5 mins or so, then I had a 5 min chat with one of the guys who clearly felt my pain! They did not ask for any cash, nor take any when I offered (would only have been the 16p I found in the cup holder anyway! ). So, I reckon those ones are good'uns!
And the first guy I saw was from a place I've been using for years, he passed me on with honesty and good will (I believe - though he also has experience with LRs, so perhaps has some sense!!!), to Cavendish Motors (the LR guys) as he thought I'd get a more accurate diagnosis.
So, despite a lot of the bad press some of these folk get, I think these ones are ok (Main dealers most definitely excluded).
I'll get in touch with Cavendish tomorrow and see if they'll have a look around it...perhaps in return for me sweeping the floor and making a brew! ...and 16p...

Any tips when it comes to looking at the oil filter? I've never experienced this before, so not sure how obvious it may (or may not) be!
,
If you have problem with bearings it is quite obvious...
Ps... don’t run it, don’t drive it..... till clear what the issue is...Best regards

You just hacksaw the plastic filter ends off, and then open up the paper filter as above pic

Video diagnosis is inherently difficult, but it could be something simple like a chain tensioner, lifter or follower.
Questions;
1/ Have you taken the oil filler cap off and listened in the hole?
2/ Is the sound more pronounced on one side?
3/ Have you stuck your head in the wheel arches?
4/ Have you taken the undertray off and listened to the bottom end?
If you've got a long screwdriver, you can try the trumpet trick. Put the blade end on each injector top and the handle end to your ear. This might indicate which cylinder, if any, has the problem.Joe

OvalAutos, thanks. Yes, I agree videos are not the best way to diagnose!
Thanks for the questions...no is the general answer. However,
1. I have not, but the LR guys did and didn't make any remarks - I don't really know what I'd be listening/feeling for. Any tips welcomed!
2. The sound seems quite consistent across the whole top of the engine - but difficult to tell.
3. Not stuck my head in the wheel arches - would not know why I was doing it! - Again, any advice welcomed.
4. No, but perhaps I will this weekend.
Keep trying to get to it during day light, but never quite have enough time after work. This weekend is planned in to have a better look around.
I like the idea of the 'trumpet trick'. Will give that a cautious go and see if there's any notable difference.
Thanks for yours and others' comments, I'm steadily building up a list of things that I am able to actually look at, which feels a bit better than giving it up as a bad job. Though trying not to get my hopes too high!!!! But ya never know!
Cheers,

I had no loss of power or excessive smoking etc. so don't suspect the pistons.
I'm about to take the Oil filter out and check that first, as suggested above. I can't think of any reason why I need to drain everything before doing this!?! Can anyone else?
If all's ok, I'll do a full oil change at a later date... if the problem gets resolved.
Will post the results later today.

Thanks Pete K. Assumed not....good job as it's off now. Will let it sit for another hour or so, then open it up and hope for the best!
Cheers.

"Motolab"
Well, whilst is does not appear to be quite as 'bad' as the pic you posted Motolab, there does appear to be some metal fragments visible. Will post pics in a mo.
I guess, this is a lost cause (for me at least). I will likely advertise this as spares/repairs, detailing the things I have discovered. If I had a garage and equipment, I may consider giving the repair a go, but I do not!
