EU Insurance for a UK plated D3 located in Spain
Hello to all,
Could anyone provide any advice as to how can I have the vehicle insured when I pick it up and return to UK or Italy, as I am an expat residing in Italy?

Just to be sure - do you know this is a real car, not a scam? There are lots of cases of cars listed in Autotrader and the like with very attractive prices, but the common theme seems to be that the car is in Spain and a UK car on UK plates - hence my concern

Of course it may be totally legitimate but the information of buying a UK registered car from Spain immediately sets off warning bells 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Hello Martin,
I thank you and appreciate your concern. I too, thought it could be a scam. The price is a little low given the year 2007. The reply I got was very general, like, 'selling it for a friend....etc', then I was sent the logbook, only page 2 and not page 1. The registered keeper is located in Belfast and with some checking the named keeper seems to run a used car sales company. The address on the V5 and used car sales company address, actually match.
However, not all questions have been answered yet, by his friend in Spain. I may just telephone him, but I prefer to have all communications in writing, if there are comebacks.
Looking for a D3 V8 HSE with LHD, so the one I am interested in fits the bill. Will let you know how I get on.

I would look elsewhere. Has all the signs of a scam to me.
It's easy to make a copy of a log book. If your still keen to check it out, ask for a photocopy of the service book and also the details of the dealer who supplied it. Then ask them to send a photo of the VIN number through the windscreen.
I wouldn't part with any money though until you see the car in the flesh.

EDIT: One other quick check is to ask them the code on the locking key and then check this with the supplying dealer if they will give you the info. Unless they have been changed, it should match

Get the VIN + Registration, compare with log book, check with supplying dealer, check (in person) with the car.
Even if it all checked out how do you know whom to pay? Do you pay the "friend" - if so can he give a valid receipt?
If anything goes wrong there could be a great conflict of laws UK/Spain/ possibly Italy ?
I wouldn't waste a moment or a penny on this - but you just might save a few pounds.

Ask his friend to send you a scanned copy of his NIE. (like a foreigner identity card or certificate).
If he is real, he has nothing to worry about by sending it.
If he does, send me a copy and I'll have a look at it to check if it's real.

But if I was you I would take the advice offered by Martin et al.
These type of scams are very common and they often use Spain as it is usually far enough away to dissuade a "quick visit" by prospective buyers (if it were the north of France or even Germany, it's easy to pop over), but close enough to appear "local".

I appreciate the offer to assist and the advice given to all those on this forum.
I too, initially thought of it as a scam, though I did not know Spain was a common location for it at the time, being curious (and interested) and made contact and started asking questions. So far those questions have been answered, but not all, and it is taking awhile for the 'friend' to respond to questions. The 'friend's' name (not a common name) seems to be linked to a business in Spain too, so adds to the intrigue and may be a step away from a scam. So far, it still shouts a 'scam', however I am intrigued to how my questions will be answered. That said, I am already prepared to walk away, if all my answers are not answered and verified to be correct.
From where I am based, there is a low-cost direct flight, so a quick pop-over for a once over would not be a problem. Will let you know how it develops.Disco ex-owner wanting to return to roots!!

"Don't be absurd I'm just busy ill get back to you when I can, normally someone would come and look at the car but you are doing everything by email and as its my friends car and he asked me to sell it for him I don't know the answers to all the questions since you are so aggressive here is his number xxxx you can call him directly. I have yet to contact the owner with a '0035' international code, is this code for Ireland?
