External 12volt connection (anderson)
I was thinking about wiring up an external 12v supply with an Anderson plug (if thats what they are call, flat grey thing) to power a detachable rear winch.
Can anyone advise where best to take the connection from :
is it best to run + and - cables, or just + and connect - to the chassis.
Also where is the best place to locate the plug. I was thinking about under the chassis rail, but thats a bit low and out of the way. Or, through the bumper...
All advice appreciated
ThanksDuncan

Copper conducts better than steel, so run both if you can. Especially when running high-power devices, you need the voltage drop to be as small as possible.
Is this the connector you are referring to?

We call them Brad-Harrison. There are a few different sizes/amperages available up to about 120A I think. Really great for the big compressors, impact wrenches etc.

Connector
Here you go, Dunc. took me a while to find it as well.
i made a right angle steel bracket that mounts on the threded holes already there for the other towing socket, i brazed a 1/4 bsp adaptor onto it for the PCL connector to screw onto. and just mounted the Anderson connector on the top of the bracket, the cables go out through the cable hole for the towing socket.
i used 50sqr welding cable back to the battery and grounded the neg to the chassis with a M12 bolt just behind the connector. No problem with voltage drop, I made a set of jump leads with an anderson connector on one end, i can jump start anything from it. Oh yes and the cover still fits on if you want it to.CLUB "Ah Shor it'll be grand"

Chris
looks good. I will have to find and alternative spot as my tow electrics go there. Or, could I replace the tow plug with an Anderson plug ?
CheersDuncan

If you attach the plug to the bumper plastic there is enough space to still be able to use the towing electrics.
Sounds flimsy, but its actually quite solid

And how are you connecting the cable to the battery? I had been thinking of 35mmsq cable but I see Chris went with 50mm. I'm looking at being able to use it for accessories like impact wrenches and compressors and perhaps the odd jump start.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

my cables run down the firewall then on top of the chassis rail all the way to the back. sorry I dunno how long it took, cos I wasn't there at the time
I reckon I could do the cables in under an hour though, everything is accessible enough.
Are you still planning on powering a winch thru the plug? will 175A be enough?
