Fault Codes Engage - help required

OK, so you may have seen a few posts on here from me today. So far:
1. Fitted new alternator - voltages look like those Robbie has referred to in his posts. So, I think it is a job well done. However, I did not take it for a test drive before ....

2. Played around with the FBH and the Nanocom to diagnose initially that FBH pump was not working. Then I realised that F28 was not inserted (?) but in checking whether it made a difference, I removed F26 (looks like compressor) and created Suspension error codes. I cleared those codes and took car for a run. Both 20A fuses were fitted to F26 and F28.

I had then got Special Progs Off and into limp mode after about 300 yds. These were the codes:
FAULT 1 OF 6
ECU: Instrument Pack
CODE:U0102
Lost communication with transfer case control module
(PENDING)

FAULT 2 OF 6
ECU: Instrument Pack
CODE:U0132
Lost communication with ride level ctrl module / Lost communication with suspension ctrl module A
(PENDING)

FAULT 3 OF 6
EGR Vale - mine are blanked, so expceted

FAULT 4 OF 6
ECU: Engine Management
CODE:P0100
Mass or volume air flow circuit

FAULT 5 OF 6
ECU: Engine Management
CODE:P0234
Turbo/supercharger overboost condition
(INTERMITTENT)

FAULT 6 OF 6
ECU: All Terrain Control
CODE:U0401
Invalid data received from engine control module/powertrain control module
(PENDING)

I then cleared the codes and went for a drive. All seems fine, but now worried I have done something amiss or it will go into limp mode again.

Thoughts?

Help please

Taken car out today. Every time it gets to about 2500 revs while accelerating I get Special Progs Off and car goes into limp mode. Suggestions on things this could be. Did I really cause it or is it something else.

Check the transfer case control module behind the battery for any sign if water ingress also remove the multi plug and check the pins also for signs of corrosion, this can cause a multitude of faults all around the vehicle.

I really should read these post fully before commenting Confused

The pending codes are more than likely a consequence of removing the fuse.

If as you say you have cleared the codes and all appears well I'd leave well alone and don't worry about it!
 EGR blanked and plumbing removed
De-cat
J E Engineering stage 1 remap
D4 rear Lights
LED bulbs all over the place!

Interestingly I had read a post about corrosion in that connection below the battery and whilst battery was disconnected, took it out and checked for corrosion. None found and put it back.

The limp mode and Special Prgos off comes in under load at about 2500 revs. I am going to read the codes again and then check whether I have done something stupid when putting everything back together.

Fault codes to follow.

So, here are the fault codes. The codes were cleared before I drove the car today, so one or must be the issue. Given I notice the issue under load and 2500 revs, could this be turbo related? But that would be a real coincidence that I replace the Alternator and then the turbo has issues!

Also going to check the MAP sensor.

Map sensor is clean. Cannot see any plugs that I have dislodged. Going to check battery area.

Now exploring possibility that the air intake that has a join down righthand side of Fan shroud has not been fitted properly! So air might be entering there and not passing the sensor in the airfilter box. Here is hoping ....

The pipe was not well connected before, but having made a good connection the limp mode problem at 3000 revs has not gone away. Going to start another thread on a couple of readings that seem off on my Nanocom and with a better title, may get more suggestions.

Turbo Issues and Limp Mode

I initially started a thread (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post1367603.html#1367603 ) yesterday as I thought me changing the alternator had caused a problem. Now I think it may be just coincidence that at 3000 revs under load the car goes into limp mode and screen flashed "Special Programs Off".

Fault Codes are listed below. Also, my Nanocom Evo, when showing live data never shows anything other than 0 for the Mass Air and the Boost readings. I have a feeling that they showed that before I had the problem, but cant be sure.

EGR's are blanked so fault 1 is always there. I don't seem to have the fault codes that some have had for a sticking turbo actuator. I can hear that doing it wiggle when engine turned off and about a year ago I did lubricate it etc just as a precaution.

What do folk think is the cause?

Clearly the mass airflow should be reading something, so I would start by checking the wiring to the MAF and back-probing the connector to ensure the 5v reference and signal are ok.

Hi Robbie, thanks for reply. I have just searched and understand now where the MAF is located:


I presume this is both air flow and temperature. I did have a temperature reading on the Nanocom.

I don't think I would have damaged it, but never say never. How would I "back probe the connector". I have a meter for reading volts and resistance etc. But don't want to put connection across wires that could cause harm.

Back-probing is just a way to check voltages without disturbing or damaging anything by slipping a narrow pin or probe between the insulation and the connector to make contact with the connector pin.

On one of my D4 MAFs (the D4 has 2 MAFs, the D3 only needs 1):

Robbie, I have 4 wires going into the MAF connector - Red/blue, Red, Yellow and Black.

Am I testing each one against a good earth? Which one should have a 4/5 volt reading and presumably that is with the ignition on (does engine need to be running?).

Is the temperature sensor in their as well. If so, that seems to be sending a reading.

I am without a wiring diagram so I am going from my (failing) memory as I do not have a D3 to check:

Red/Blue - Power
Red - MAF signal to ECM
Yellow - Intake Air Temp to ECM
Black - Common Signal ground for IAT and MAF to ECM

If the IAT is reading correctly it suggests the ground is good as is the IAT sense to ECM.

Test with engine running. There are guides and videos on the internet on how to test a MAF with a multimeter.

So, with the ignition on I have just under 5v to each connection bar the black, which I presume is the negative. I checked the resistance of the black to a good earth (battery terminal) and it confirmed the black wire goes back to earth.

So this presumably confirms that the power is getting to the sensors. How do I test if the sensor is working, or is the zero on the Nanocom reading enough to confirm that?
