FBH Fire Risk - Worth Checking Yours

In recent weeks I have seen 2 FBHs leaking diesel onto the FBH exhaust and a further 2 vehicles with FBH pipes that are starting to perish. One of the leaking pipes was still able to run the FBH normally and the owner thought the additional white smoke was due to the age of the FBH and was unaware of the true cause.

The problem is the short piece of rubber pipe that runs close to the FBH exhaust and turns back on itself near the front left corner of the FBH. Exposure to high temperatures appears to be degrading the hose quicker than you would expect. When you give them a gentle squeeze they are no longer flexible and springy but feel more rigid, dry or even crusty. Of course, some D3s are now 10 years old or more.

So next time you are under the bonnet give the fuel pipe a quick feel and squeeze. If it does not feel right treat yourself to a fresh bit of rubber pipe before Disco Inferno.

Don't know but as marine or automotive fuel grade pipe is so cheap I would be surprised if the JLR price could beat buying a small piece off the reel.

What's the fuse number if you just want to pull it and leave it permanently off? Never found it makes any difference, even downs to mid teens below.

Had similar problem with my 300tdi. Injector leak off (or spill rail) pipes degraded to the extent the pipe had cracked under the nylon braid covering Shocked

Fuse 28 in the Battery Junction Box, but I wouldn't. Wink

I wouldn't pull the fuse out of choice either. It's there to do a worthwhile job.

Will give the tube a squeeze next time I'm under the bonnet. What's the betting the LR part route involves buying a complete FBH?

Robbie, I think that you have just missed out on a business opportunity, why didn't you buy a 100m roll of tubing, cut it up into 6" pieces and sell on here for £15-£20 each + postage. I am sure that if you put forward a pitch on Dragons Den they would fund the roll of tubing in exchange for a 90% stake in your company Whistle

This rubber pipe is not (IIRC) available as a separate piece from the plastic pipe. But the plastic pipe is only £22 or so, LR only part...
