fuel quality .v. autobox performance |
|
a few months ago my d3 went in to rectify a significantly lumpy downshift when coastng at low speeds. the software was reset and after the usual 'learning' period everything appeared hunky dory. i have since realised that the visit to the workshop co-incided with my local garage getting 'super diesel', which i have been running eversince. this is where it gets confusing.......following a recent trip to dorset for a week, i was unable to source a filling station which did an equivalent 'super diesel' and so filled up with ordinary diesel. within a few miles the lumpy downshifts returned
when we got home i filled up again with 'super diesel' and the gearbox reverted to its super smooth downshifting!!!!!
i dont profess to be a technical expert but i cant get my head round how the quality of the fuel can affect the performance of the gearbox, as it would appear.
anyone have any thoughts and can explain it in laymans terms?????
*for the purpose of the experiment the 'super diesel' in question is TOTAL excellium (orange filler - no missfuels)

I found that my 300 TDI always seemed to give two or three mpg more when I used BP diesel but this cost a few pence more than supermarket fuel so there was no real cost benefit.
