Where to get torque converter |
|
Where's the best place to get a torque converter , I've been told to get a genuine one as we tow 3.5 tons and steep hills etc my local indy who will do the work said a Landrover one is about £860 I think but is it possible to get them from ZF and save a load of cash , a bit like the tow bar being £100 cheaper from thule even though they make it for landrover .
Thanks

? I'm not sure what the OP is asking... all Auto gearboxes (non-DSG) have (or incorporate) a torque converter. As do (for the oldies amongst us) pre-selector manual gearboxes (eg 1950/60's Daimlers) and some truck boxes.
.. maybe you need an automatic D3. End of problem. In fact, why did LR ever make a manual.... ____

Doh. Should have EITHER read it better, OR drunk less beer. Quite right. Try CWS 4x4 breakers...:

Are you/they 100% certain that the Torque converter is the issue?
Did they also test the oil for glycol to make sure the rad isn't leaking fluid into the box cooling system?
The thing is that box repairs are quiet labour intensive. If you buy a torque converter yourself and the problem isn't fixed you need to have the box removed again at your own cost.
However if LR diagnoses a TC failure, and you have them repair it, you have warranty on that repair.
You might save a couple of bucks taking this matter into your own hands but end up with a massive bill.
I know, cause I have been there....... CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

Yeah Gloucester gearboxes down in Bristol tested the oil when they did the megaflush and found no water/antifreeze , but the flush while improving it still left a judder , local indy just rips box out and sends them to Niel Smith in cannock , but Niel Smith wanted to test drive it first to access what the problem is because after doing a lot of research (i.e Bodsy telling me this was probable cause and then reading this forum !) it sounded to me like the torque converter was slipping , so took it to Niel for test drive and they were pretty happy it was just a T/C issue , He can do the repair no bother but it's a long way to go and then get back and vice versa so would be easier to get local indy to do it but he looked at genuine landrover but was just wondering if you can get them from ZF themselves but don't know who supplys ZF parts

Thanks for the link Renton,
ZF put me in touch with nearest dealer 'JP Automatics' in Bristol , they will do a ZF reconed one for about £526 plus vat or they recon mine to same standard in one day for £287 plus vat . They will also supply the genuine oil from Shell 'Life Guard 6 ' for £10.50 plus vat per litre so a huge saving over having a Landrover sticker on the bottle
If they find nothing wrong with the TC they will let us Know and then we will replace whole box with a recon and thus only wasted money will be £20 for postage of the Torque converter so have got nothing to lose .
I wonder if I added up all the money this forum has saved me by fixing stuff myself or diagnosing stuff and getting an indy to fix what it would have come to already instead of just taking the car to landrover and asking them to fix my faults .
