Gvif connected to CAN wiring

I have 2 questions if anyone could assist

1. I know that hids4u say in the installation that you dont need to connect
The gvif interface to the CAN wiring, but i was wondering what
Difference does it make if connected as other installation instructions
Show it to be connected ( http://www.gsmserver.com/content_file/prod..._v6_xx.PDF )

2. The Installation also stated to connect the gvif to the sat nav dvd
Iv seen instructions showing you can connect to behind touch screen aswell
( http://www.gsmserver.com/content_file/prod...ouch_1.PDF )
Does this make a difference? I.e will i not then not need to switch to sat nav
To have gvif on, will i be able to acess gvif from any menu having pressed the toggle button?

Thks

You can connect your GVIF to the canbus wires, I had my unit connected to my canbus because at the time the gvif's that where sent out had the wrong remote and would not work, so to get my gvif to change the video input I wired mine to the canbus and it worked ok. I could then use the hard button on left side of the touch screen to change the video input.
But now I have the toggle switch working I disconnected it from the canbus as it was not needed.

As far as I know and I am sure Ian will comment on this the gvif unit needs the sat source on the screen to be able to display any of the inputs from the gvif unit because it overlays these images, so I can't see how you would get a picture to display on the touch screen without going through the sat nav unit with the gvif image.

And yes once setup with the gvif unit you can toggle the sources .

Flack Thumbs Up

Thanks flack for your reply. Thumbs Up

So if i understood this right having connected to the canbus will give you a hard button on
Touch screen (same as toggle switch) to switch between av.

Will this also give you sound from the speakers or do you still need to
Connect to the aux in?

If you notice on your pdf link, said GVIF unit (which is slightly different to the ones most of us have so far), suggests plugging the unit behind the screen ONLY if you don't have the factory SatNav (though not aware of D3s having the screen but no SatNav...? I guess it also applies if you want to make the LR Nav unit redundant).

A bit further down, and I quote "When the interface is set up Original Navigation" shows the GVIF connected to the SatNav DVD unit, under the passenger seat, as per this forum's usual practice.

Assuming the toggle switch that comes with your unit works, it is suggested not bothering with the CAN soldering option as a preventative measure (don't forget these units are essentially clones, with varying quality control processes in place), so that if the unit blows, it won't affect the rest of the CAN bus. That said, I know of no-one having had problems with it, as Flack's experience testifies...

Have a look at both my sig files (the second one mostly for your needs), which will hopefully clarify things Thumbs Up

Cheers

On older QDIS GVIF the CAN-Bus stuff was not working and QDIS confirmed that. Wether the Input selection, nor the automatic switch to the rear cam. Maybe they have solved the problems now.

Best regards

I recently connected my GVIF unit to the canbus on the sport. as the toggle swtich looked a dog on the dash on the sport unlike D3 - and i wanted to see how it worked so i could share it with you all

We only say dont connect it so that if the worst did happen - you mess up the connection or a fault occurs within the gvif unit - no damage can occur to the canbus - and you dont blame us.

Thats said on my own car i can do it and share my own experience for your info only

So - when its done - you can indeed toggle normally between Av1 2 3 inputs and back to sat nav. however, one downside is that when the car starts up and you click i agree, or when it goes back to screen after using reverse - the screen it goes back to is no longer the map but the pre map screen where you need to select on or off road.

other than that it works a treat and no more ugly toggle button

you still need the infra red receiver somewhere so you can use the set up menu

hope that helps
