Help diagnosing christmas tree/bongs/limp mode!

hi Guys,

I could really do with some advice here! We've had the car 4 years and it's otherwise been really reliable but it's thrown one off sporadic wobblies which have disappeared after cycling the ignition and we've never bothered fully investigating. However, recently it's getting ridiculous, it's happening 8 - 10 times a day some days and other times it'll go for a whole week with no problems.

The shutdowns only seem to happen when my wife is driving it (coincidence?! Whistle ) and when it's wet and she's thinks it's after going up and down farm tracks through puddles. This isn't the kind of driving I do so it's possible it is just this and not her technique!

the car recovers after cycling the ignition. I have bought a new brake swtich and bulbs from Steve but I haven't got around to fitting them, yet.

Fault codes this evening are as follows (8 shutdowns today):

Vehicule scanned on 05-03-2014 18:40
Using IIDTool+BLE
AAM-Audio Amplifier
• B1A96-Bus still active after shutdown request
BCM-Body Control
• B1B70-Local interconnection network bus circuit 2
PCM-Engine TDV6
• P0402 Exhaust gas recirculation flow excessive detected
• P0101-Mass or volume air flow - circuit range/performanc
• P2290-00 (68) Unknown
IPC-Instrument Pack
• U0132-Lost communication with ride level control module
• U0159-Lost communication with parking assist control module
• U0127-Lost communication with tire pressure monitor module
PBM-Parking Brake
• U0100-Lost communication with engine control module/ powertrain control module 'A'
TPM-Tyre Pressure
• C1A56-Front left wheel module
• C1A58-Front right wheel module
• C1A60-Rear left wheel module
• C1A62-Rear right wheel module

The TPMS is irrelevant as I have the winter wheels on and they don't have any transponders. the EGRs are blanked with the BAS kit and there is no orange light. the delayed shutdown seems to appear on the fault list even when the car hasn't shutdown so I'm not too worried about that either.

Does anyone have any suggestions about where I should go next?!

The time before I had the following codes:

thanks for any help!

Same as Mikey said, P2290 Injector control pressure too low.

thanks guys, what does that mean practically? New HP fuel pump? What's the likely cost of that? And this time around is the first time I've seen this code, could it be a one off or is it definitely the problem? And, is the wet weather bit a red herring?

EDIT*** Just found this so will work through the options!***

Generally, a low fuel pressure fault code is lack of fuel upto the HPFP, or HPFP not maintaining enough pressure.

EU4 models tend to suffer from blocked fuel filters more than the early ones, so it is the cheapest, and easiest place to start Thumbs Up
It may be a weak in tank fuel pump, blocked filter, restricted pipework, or worn HPFP.

Start with the basics Thumbs Up

OK, so I replaced the fuel filter and all was quiet until yesterday when it shutdown 20 times in the day and I got...

VIN: SALLAAA177A415xxx
Vehicule scanned on 21-03-2014 07:32
Using IIDTool+BLE
AAM-Audio Amplifier
• B1A96-Bus still active after shutdown request
BCM-Body Control
• B1B70-Local interconnection network bus circuit 2
PCM-Engine TDV6
• P0402 Exhaust gas recirculation flow excessive detected
• P0101-Mass or volume air flow - circuit range/performanc
• P0087-Fuel rail/system pressure - too low
• P0089-22 (6C) Unknown
IPC-Instrument Pack
• U0132-Lost communication with ride level control module
• U0159-Lost communication with parking assist control module
• U0127-Lost communication with tire pressure monitor module
PBM-Parking Brake
• U0100-Lost communication with engine control module/ powertrain control module 'A'

The fuel pump was replaced in the recall three years ago but it's done 70k since then, I haven't got P2290 this time but P0087 looks pretty damning. Am I still cruising for a new HP pump?

Cheers,
H

I also had also these symptoms as previously mentioned on this forum. This went on for over 2 years and main dealer replaced wiring loom which solved it. Just over a year later Christmas tree back infrequently but got much worse of late. Replaced compressor with forum buy but tests showed old and replacement were working anyway. Extensive tests with site sponsor Geoff could not solve problem so off to main dealer. Cut a long story short they spent 7 days testing and claimed it was compressor but that did not solve it so old one put back on. During testing new battery removed and replaced and all of a sudden everything worked fine with no faults. Dealer bemused and carried out further two days of tests to no avail and advised to drive away and come back when fault shows up which is now 6 weeks with no fault.
Interestingly, left Disco at Heathrow for 5 days recently and upon return fault showed up straight away so recycled and all has been well for another week so far.
What is interesting is that every time car was cleaned at local valet they used pressure spray under wheel arches and I knew this would provoke faults as usual and it did . Also, whenever it rained faults also showed so I have no idea what the problem is/was but just an example.
So, wish you luck but my gut feeling was always connected with low battery charge being the cause which may be right or completely wrong.

You can check for fuel pressure from the tank at the schrader valve at the back of the engine and try to listen to the fuel pump when the ignition switch is turned on. My preference is to also check the current on the fuel pump fuse with a multimeter. If that is ok start thinking HPFP….

Thumbs Up

Cheer guys, it only happens when my wife is driving!! I can't recreate it when I drive it, or at least it doesn't happen...

We have thought the problems have been associated with wet weather (but most recently it was dry), bumpy tracks or hard braking but we just can't consistently recreate it and the low fuel pressure seems 'different' enough to pursue (if that makes sense).

The battery is a fairly new Bosch (1 year old) (not LR branded); the IIDtool picks up 11.4V with key in pos2 but 14.5V when engine is running... maybe I'll try replacing the battery....

The LP fuel pump sounds normal when I first turn on the ignition but I haven't tested the pressure, sounds like a job for tomorrow!!
Thanks!

Just an update because I haven't had time to do any further diagnostics due to worklpad but it happened to me on the M40 on tuesday; 50 miles into my journey at a steady GPS 70mph and HDC fault etc. I wasn't on the brakes or accelerating, changing gear or anything, just a sudden strop...

VIN: SALLAAA177A********
Vehicule scanned on 25-03-2014 16:10
Using IIDTool+BLE
BCM-Body Control
• B1B70-Local interconnection network bus circuit 2
• B1D01-Right low beam circui

PCM-Engine TDV6
• P0087-Fuel rail/system pressure - too low
IPC-Instrument Pack
• U0132-Lost communication with ride level control module
• U0159-Lost communication with parking assist control module
• U0127-Lost communication with tire pressure monitor module
PBM-Parking Brake
• U0100-Lost communication with engine control module/ powertrain control module 'A'

Addmittedly, the right low beam bulb has failed on the trip at some point, would that affect things? Secondly, I'm not getting P2290 since I replaced the fuel filter, just P0087, is this significant?

It happened a lot with my wife today and I got:

VIN: SALLAAA177A*******
Vehicule scanned on 26-03-2014 18:12
Using IIDTool+BLE
AHCM-Auxilary Heater
• B1D29-No start, even after restart attempt
BCM-Body Control
• B1B70-Local interconnection network bus circuit 2
• B1D01-Right low beam circui

PCM-Engine TDV6
• P0101-Mass or volume air flow - circuit range/performanc
• P0199-27 ( 2 8 ) Unknown
• P0087-Fuel rail/system pressure - too low
IPC-Instrument Pack
• U0132-Lost communication with ride level control module
• U0159-Lost communication with parking assist control module
• U0127-Lost communication with tire pressure monitor module
PBM-Parking Brake
• U0100-Lost communication with engine control module/ powertrain control module 'A'

So, P0199 is a new one - something to do with oil temp sensor?

the plan - replace the brake switch and bulbs (low bean and rear brake) over the weekend and run some live values on fuel pressures with the IIDTool to see if I get any anomalies... I haven't got a LP fuel pressure tester so I think I might take it to Risborough 4x4 next week for some testing...

P0199 = Engine oil temperature sensor circuit intermittent.

P0087 does sound like a lead to follow...

Yes, you're right, it's the commonality at the moment, but only since I changed the fuel filter!
