I have posted about this issue earlier in the year but I am now completely stuck on where to go next. my 2007 D3 has developed an issue in the last 3 months or so...
It started with the instrument cluster completely switching off for split second but always coming straight back on, it would happen every now and then. Since then it has steadily got worse and worse to the point now where it is off for the majority of every journey and in some cases doesn't even come on when I start the car (it usually powers up at some point in the journey and then starts its off and on again)
I have had the cluster out to check for any signs of water ingress- all looks fine to me.
I have tried playing with the wires to look for a loose connection but to no avail.
No idea where to go from here...

Is it only the illumination that doesn't work, or does everything not work? I.E. does the rev counter, speedo etc still work?
My illumination started to get intermittent, and then stopped working all together. I traced my issue to the plug behind the rotary headlight switch. Plug C0041. I think it was pin 9 that was loose. It's the one on either end which powers the cluster illumination.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for that, It is the whole lot the needles, the illumination, the screen, everything! it looks like it does when the car is switched off.

I'm not in any way suggesting this as a fix, just sharing my experience:
My cluster was behaving in exactly this way. Split second failures (all needles to zero and no info screen) developing into longer outages. More frequently at startup in cold weather but in time it would happen almost whenever it wanted.
Changing my battery seemed to stabilise things for a while, but eventually it came back. Then my alternator failed and after replacement I have not had any further issues.
So I can't say for certain that the miraculous recovery was anything to do with the new battery an alternator, but it was a happy coincidence. It also tallies with a comment I saw somewhere about the problem sounding more like a loss of power than a problem with the instrument cluster itself. May be worth taking it out to verify the power to the cluster. ***GONE*** 2007 XS Manual in Wet Weekend (Stornoway Grey) ***GONE***

Out of interest, did the replacement of the alternator resolve the issue in the long term?
Thanks

Unfortunately it didn’t work as a long term fix. I got quite a few months with no problem but as the weather has changed to be a little colder and damper the problem has emerged again and it’s probably a little worse.
Tempted as I am to send it to a cluster repair place, I can’t live without the car for any length of time, so I’m probably going to need to hold out until the spring to get that done. ***GONE*** 2007 XS Manual in Wet Weekend (Stornoway Grey) ***GONE***

Ah, sorry to hear it didn't work. Thanks for the feedback.
I test drove a D3 yesterday with this problem, and am thinking I will steer clear of it, as I wouldn't want the dealer to 'fix it' then it reappear in a few months time.
Cheers

Yeah, the absolute fix for it seems to be to take it out (relatively easy) and ship it off to a specialist who will repair it and return it, usually within a week.
Seem to recall a cost between £200 and £300. Compared to some repair costs on the D3 that's pretty minor and I can't see that it's a symptom of anything else failing, so if the rest of the vehicle is good, I wouldn't let a flaky cluster put you off. ***GONE*** 2007 XS Manual in Wet Weekend (Stornoway Grey) ***GONE***
