It's easy to say go down the LR route but £10k is a lot of money to spend, especially on something that is worth around £20k and depreciating all the time. I'm seriously considering one of the cheaper options as the warranty would cover the bill.
It might be worth seeing how it goes while it is under their, albeit short, guarantee and see then how it feels.

Would your warranty cover the replacement engine in the event of a failure (no matter what the source)?Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

If Land Rover are no help I would find a low mileage engine from a breaker.
At least with a used engine it should not have been messed around with.
Recon engines can be of dubious quality and its hard to know what you are getting.
Good luck and hope you find a solution that works for you.
LR should hopefully help especially with the low mileage yours has done.D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.

Could you not pay to have it recovered to someone like Disco Mikey who does this sort of stuff up in Scotland?
FWIW I would have paid 10K for mine and decided to run it into the ground. 2 years on its an incredibly reliable car. I'd only have swapped it for another used car with unknown history/use.
That said it's currently in the garage for its early 210K service and just failed the MOT on brake lines - but that's what running an old car comes with!

Be very wary of companies offering refurbed units and fitting. There are lots of dodgy set ups out there and a few famous ones in the South East that keep going bust and setting up as a new company on a regular basis.

I had to change my engine on my D3, the route I went was one from a write off, the engine at that time, and being a D3 was £2200 with slightly less mileage than my old engine as opposed to over £5K for a new short block, plus I then had loads of spares/extras to sell on. The cost of changing it over plus changing clutch, flywheel and brake pipes was around £3k total.
I would go to ebay or scrap yards (breakeryard.co.uk), and get yourself a second hand engine, you will still be around £6-8K as a guess, but an awful lot less than £14k. I wouldn't touch these refurb places with a barge pole, especially when they were selling refurb D3 engines before parts had become available.

WBAC value is for it in working order, so you wouldnt get 18k for it with a knackered engine

Might be worth inquiring about, then sending to Disco Mikey for fitment. Does seem a lot of money though for a used engine. I guess it depends how low the mileage actually is, and documentation etc.

_Chris - here's your answer, just get the car to Disco Mikey & get him to fit an EuroJag engine, although I would try to get them to reduce the asking price from £6k. Maybe ask DM to buy the engine for you, as I guess he's in the best place to negotiate with EuroJag.

I though it seemed a lot. Maybe it's a very very low mileage engine. Still seems a lot though for a used one

Bill - The warranty Co. have said that they will deal with any VAT registered garage. What would be interesting is whether one of these engine replacement companies would be happy dealing with a warranty Co. that are likely to inspect parts and check the work before paying. They have an ongoing interest (another two years cover) in making sure that the repairs are satisfactory.
BAZ8046 - I probably would have more faith in a low mileage engine (if the provenance could be proved) from a breaker than a supposedly reconditioned engine.
John C - I would love to find someone on this forum who is happy to take on the work, has a good reputation and could do it for a sensible amount of money. Disco Mikey sounds ideal if it were a recon engine rather than from a breaker. I doubt that the warranty Co. will pay for 2nd hand. Also, as I'm in Kent, the logistics aren't ideal but not impossible.
Moo - Scary stuff, but there must be someone who isn't a cowboy out there.
Dave T - This would probably be a very practical solution other than I need to involve the warranty co. who I doubt will go for an engine from a breaker.
Al Cope - Correct, it assumes that the car is in working condition. The point that I was trying to make is the net cost/value of just getting the car fixed and then sold through WBAC compared to putting in a new LR engine.
Disco Mikey - PM on its way.
Thanks everyone for your input. It is an extremely stressful situation, not least trying to chose between the options and weighing up the not insignificant sums involved.

Totally totally understand the dilemma - been there - really agonising and frustrating - hope it goes smoothly.
My Warranty Company took a little nudging to get it all working, but I did sense an enthusiasm for working with independents rather than main dealers, and also they don't want to put you back in a position that makes you better than you were before. So an independent with a used engine might suit them quite well.2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

Chris,
With just 55k on the clock and almost full LR service history, I don't understand why you haven't contacted LR customer services and pursued them for some sort of contribution. I did this with a much older, higher mileage D3 (more details in my reply here http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic148893.html) and got a full contribution from LR.
In my eyes, this has to be your best option? Worst case scenario you will have to cover the costs of recovery and an hour or two of your local main dealer investigating. They should be able to spot if it is one of the terminal design issues "known" about such as spun bearings or broken crankshaft and then if confirmed, you are up for a discussion with LR.
FWIW, if I hadn't been successful when I approached LR, my 2nd option was shipping our D3 up to Disco Mikey for a replacement Eurojag engine.
Good luck however this pans out.Cheers,
Gareth
