My daughter ranger the rear passenger door on her 2018 DS quotes to fix it by a body shop were £2550 -£2700.

Her excess was £750.

As a nurse she's classified as high risk, so her insurance is already £1800. If she claimed then it would cost more over five years than her excess etc. With this in mind I thought I'd try and find a door and just change that, nothing else was damaged.

I found a door in the same colour in Leeds. It was cheaper for me to drive to Leeds, stay in a hotel and get a body shop to change the interior door trim and refit and polish the door than her excess. £690 all in.

The bodyshops do seem to think they can print money with some of these repairs.

Time for a rant on this: my D3 needs a new rear door and wheel arch trim after someone changed lanes without looking recently. It’s a good few years since I had any bodywork done, and I can see why insurance costs are so high. Instead of looking at the car to see what’s needed, the (large) bodyshop want to take it in, then presumably work out what they need and order the parts. They can’t tell me how long it’ll take and said “just tell her insurer you need a hire car, it’ll be easier”. Easier for them, but a huge and unnecessary cost for the insurance company, especially if I demand the large car that I could. I can only assume that if every repair now is handled like that, it’s no wonder our premiums are going up.

Very similar experience to me a few years back. I rear ended a car due to diesel on a wet road in my VW T5 Van. It was still drivable & visually required bumber, grille & bonnet.
Took it to the insurance co's "preferred" bodyshop - they wanted to take it in, dismantle & & then quote for the repairs. They did not get the job, I managed to get the parts off eBay (as a bonus the bonnet & bumber were the correct colour) and half a day in a general garage & job done.

Agreed, thats where the repair money goes.

Got a quote from LV for £720. Cheapest quote was through moneysaingexpert site.

Thanks @terryall - I went through MoneySavingsExpert (MoneySupermarket), and got my cheapest quote so far £1100.

I turned 50 this year, so I've asked Saga for a quote. Unfortunately, they seem to have had an issue with their software as it came out at £78,000 (Yes 78K), they're going to get someone to get back to me Very Happy

Ok - quick update.

Saga didn't call me back as promised so I called them. It transpiers that £78,000 is the correct quote, it's their defacto reply when they don't want to insure you.

Saga

Axa - well they can't beat £1500

Axa

The AA - £1700

The AA

So the cheapest I can find is MOJA via confused.com (Without any extras like legal cover or windscreen cover) £1029, If I add windscreen cover (Which I probably will do), It's still the cheapest at £1050.

Also just got my renewal , wow, just wow, from A plan which doubled since last year now just under £1100 , did call them but alas was considered to be under the entire Land Rover tree , ie keyless entry

Went on confused and compare the market and got a basic quote from Hastings for £380, with breakdown cover, key, protected ncb etc it came to £520 which indeed is a good saving

That’s with a full clean licence since 1986 and 12 x years ncb

Also found confused.com cheaper than compare with the same insurance provider

Best of all mine passed its mot today , plus all new discs, calipers and pads etc , only advisory is about the rear lower arms , which I’ll get done very soon along with the rear tie bars

Knew premiums were going up but wow not doubling

Does seem it’s gone up dramatically this year

My heart goes out to the new D4 - FFRR owners as out of curiosity I checked and was getting quotes for around £2.800 Big Cry

Fingers crossed isn’t to bad mate

FiL was with >MoreThan, who stopped doing car insurance. They gave all his details to swinton Insurance who found "best deal" was £3500 ish.

Last year he paid £650 !

GoCompare found AXA deal at £1115.

His neighbour's son had also been with >MoreThan and Swinton found best deal was £6200 ... up from £650.

He found a deal for £800.

Sadly I suspect some people will fall for Swinton's blurb and get massively ripped off.

Blimey that’s a serious saving by just shopping around , don’t know what’s happened this year that’s effected so many premiums drastically increasing , seems it’s the keyless entry

Indeed feel so sorry for new young drivers with the daft quotes they get

Also wonder how many customers A plan lost this year after restructuring there company

Plus wonder if it will force second hand prices to fall with the later land rovers, ie, FFRR, RRS D4’s etc

Admiral attributed the recent car insurance rise to several factors, including:

https://metro.co.uk/2023/09/29/why-car-ins...-19576593/

Severe weather changes – Extreme changes between hot and cold can have a detrimental effect on cars
Car theft increases – An increase in car theft has also driven up the cost of claims
Rising cost of car repairs – Inflation has led to an increase in labour costs
Energy crisis – Admiral claim the steep increases in the price of energy have added around £70 to the cost of some repairs
Delays to the import of parts – There has been a delay to the importation of parts, meaning cars will likely be off the road for longer, and courtesy car costs will increase

According to my car insurance quote research, Swinton ‘essential’ insurance is only Defaqto 3 stars.

Insurance

Doesn’t get any better does it, looks like a few hours of comparison site trawling this weekend,
Hastings multi car policy, nothing changed from our side from last year, apart from year older and car lesser value

How your price compares to last year's

Last year's total price £1,309.35
This year's total price £3,171.27

I saved over £2k by moving from Admiral multiyear to individual policies with various companies. Oddly my Defender and at the time, 17 year old daughters D3 was cheaper with Admiral.

Just had the insurance through for my 1999 Disovery 2 up from £400 to over £600.....that's more than I paid for my D4!!
Keyless entry can't be blamed for that.
Looks like I have a weekend of searching around on t'internet ahead of me.

I don't know if this is common knowledge but you need to get you're policy booked about 2-4 weeks before it's due as that can make a big difference to quotes. I was told by an insurance company that 2 weeks is the sweet spot, but playing around with quotes on a comparison site I found that as long as it was over 2 weeks, it was cheaper in some cases significantly.
