The 'beast's photos have been tucked into a few D4 handbooks already and will be going into mine too.
Still makes no sense that the gearbox release was in the D3 and early D4 handbooks but specifically removed for the new rotary knob. The fact that the part is bright read and is operated by a coin suggests that the designer thought users would need to operate it.
Should really forward this question/complaint through to Liam.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

As the instigator of this thread I have to say I researched the question thoroughly before asking it. It may have been posted soon after the "hide away knob" appeared but I couldn't find any previous threads on the subject. Why? Try including the word "towing" in the search and you get thousands of threads on towing caravans which is why I didn't put towing in the title.Â
Basically I couldn't think of a way of searching for what I was looking for without knowing the answer. Perhaps "gearbox release" would have done it if I had known one existed!Â
A sticky would be good but a handbook entry would be better.Â
(Incidentally what was the title of the original post?)

When I had the rear wheels locked up despite trying the manual release, my recovery truck used those dollies on the rear wheels then lifted the front wheels up off the road and towed it that way. I had visions of them dragging it screaming and kicking up onto a flatbed but when I explained over the phone what the problem was they had the sense to send out the right equipment and a guy who knew how to use it.
