Just flashed transmission ECU with IID

Decided it was time to do something about low speed clunks and thumps from the auto transmission on my TDV6.

Flack was very kindly going to upload the latest firmware to my 'box, but unfortunately my work commitments got in the way.

So a few days ago, I thought I'd ask GAP Diagnostics when their IID would be able to do this, as I've had one for a year or so. To my delight, I received a very speedy reply, and Patrick from GAP asked if I'd like to test their latest beta software, which included this ability. I immediately replied with a "yes please!".

So, to summarise, I connected my CTEK MXS 25 maintainer (do NOT simply use a battery charger, as it will not cope with any voltage drop, and the update may fail). If you cannot do this, you could use jump leads from another vehicle and have its engine running.

First, I cleared the transmission adaptation settings. Very important to do this.

Then, I flashed my auto transmission ECU. It took 6 minutes to complete. Make sure you do NOT turn the ignition off until the seemingly dead instrument panel comes back to life, and the message appears to tell you that the upload was successful.

So how does the car drive now? Well, in one word, brilliantly! The low speed clunks and thumps, particularly when decelerating and braking at very low speeds have disappeared. The whole box seems smoother. It took several miles for the transmission to 'adapt', because it is very important that you clear the transmission adaptation settings before you start.

I'm one delighted Landie Lover today, and extremely grateful to Patrick at GAP for letting me be a beta tester. Their level of support is brilliant and I'd highly recommend the IID if you're in doubt. So far I've installed the new AMK suspension compressor software, cleared EGR fault codes after installing the BAS blanking kit (I know they return though) and reset the service indicator. It's also great for controlling the park brake when you're doing a service.

Please note that whatever tool you use to flash an ECU, there is a small risk that you may run into problems, and your car may be off the road for a few days, whilst the problem is solved. GAP will no doubt help you with this. I am very lucky, as I have another car that I could have relied upon if needed.

Hope this helps. I believe key programming is also possible with the latest beta update to the tool as well now. I cannot speak highly enough of these guys. Level of support is excellent, and the tool is great value for money. I love the fact that I can work on my car myself thanks to this.

Thumbs Up

Excellent!

To help others (and even yourself) can you fill in your car profile so we know what you have?

2006 Rangie Sport TDV6 SE. That's why I can't update my car profile.

I'm an imposter I guess, but the technical info on this forum is unparalleled. Would have got a Disco if it would have fitted in my garage Laughing

Great news! Can't wait for it to become available!
I've had my adaptions reset with a fault mate and done with my iid tool to no real result, so changing the firmware sounds like it'll do the trick!

Do you know if it's only new firmware, or does it also recalibrate the clutches?

How many miles have you done since?

I thought mine had been sorted twice, but after a few hundred miles the clunks and thumps came back...

Seeing Flack on Friday for an update, fingers crossed... Thumbs Up

About 20 miles so far. No sign of a return to the old clunks and knocks.

It was definitely a re-flash, not just a transmission adaption re-set. Done that a couple of times in the past, didn't make any difference.

We'll see how things go. I'll report back if anything returns during the next few hundred miles. Where I live, it's plenty of low speed gear changes, often with nose to tail stop-starts during the rush hours, so the box has had a good workout during the last couple of days. Used to be horrible, listening to the thumps and bumps at low speed deceleration. All of those have disappeared.

I've noticed that the up-shift seems smoother as well.

Maybe the guys from GAP will be along to answer your query tmagnet.

First time was a flush and reset, instant improvement, took about 1000miles for the noises to return...

Second time was a reset and reflash, with software from 2006 rather than 2005 iirc... Took about 100miles for the noises to come back...

Friday will see my original software modified and put back on, so fingers crossed!

I wonder if you have not had the updated re-flash?

Have a look here. My issue was the page headed with Step In Delay - Bump (MY05 and MY06)

Thanks for that pal, although I'm sure Geoff and Flack have seen it before, I certainly haven't.

A lot of ”fixes” on there point to the selector cable... Confused

Yes I get in there & lube the selector coupling on the side of the box every year at service time.
