Cheers Pete , wasn’t sure if there was any difference regarding a particular year and if they had detachable pipes to make changing them a lot easier , didn’t wish for the op to get it and find it was wrong
Must admit on my old freelander 1 ! had to replace the heater matrix, was a nightmare as most of the dashboard had to come out
When I did remove the old heater matrix and from my Previous experience working on boilers as an experiment I tried using a powerflush machine and even some other chemicals on the heater matrix , sort of cleared it a little bit but was negligible as I monitored the flow rate before and after
So gave up and bought a new heater matrix for the freelander , picture below
Sorry I’m gassing again , lol

Nice one Pete
Great time saving in just leaving the old pipes in situ plus some interesting pictures of the inside of the old matrix
Thks again as very informative

Hi all, coming in late to this one, but if you are flushing and back flushing the heater matrix, if you can get to it try knocking it gently with something to agitate what’s in it.
I’ve had no heater in my van for three years, had to strip half the dash out but it worked wonders.

Hi
Nothing like a 5 x minute job taking the dashboard apart
must admit ref flushing , shame the design of the matrix didn’t have opposing outlets like they do with rads etc as I feel that would certainly help reducing the amount of build up at one end
Would be brilliant to have something like a magnaclean / filter screen thats easily assessable under the bonnet to try and prevent this from happening
Yeh i know I need to get out more

i guess the design on this car means the pipes start up high and drop down to matrix.
Once dirt drops down it’s very difficult to get it out
Part of the 2 part chassis design

This is correct, the replacement ones with the detachable pipes would be easy to remove and clean but i suppose once you have replaced it its very unlikely to need doing for sometime.

Arguably, heater matrix replacements happen mostly well after the manufacturer’s intended lifetime for the vehicle. It’s very inconvenient for us but from a design point of view it’s probably satisfactory.

Hi all
Just about to do another big flush and new coolant
How do I drain the entire old coolant please? Or as much as possible so I can put what I know is the correct fluid in please?
Also, the tapping thing I did with a winch once that ceased up. Worked wonders!

remove a bottom radiator hose drains the coolant. (passenger side)
Don't know how easy that is.
