I thought you started testing at 30 degrees C and when at 40 degrees checked no more could be added then close fill hole. Obviously with engine running. This is for 6 speed D3. D4 is I think higher temp. temperature. If you stop filling when too cold, you may overfill and opposite when too high. Difference can be as much as .6 ltr.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.
Thanks for the tips that's this weeks job sortedRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

Not sure about that MILLERS stuff. It seams compatible with too many gearboxes for my liking
with the greatest respect ZF doesn't manufacture oil they make transmissions
I would put money on it they spec the oil additives/mix/package etc to match their transmissions exactly.

The Jaguar guys with the same ZF gearbox like it.
Only problem is, its red, but they have been through it, and its meant to be ok for the ZF6

I’ll just offer my layman’s thoughts on identifying by color... which is not to do it. The dye is there to identify it as ATF, typically, so someone doesn’t pour the wrong stuff by mistake in the wrong place.
I’ve still got the BG Universal ATF 312, which has a red dye in it but according to the vendor meets or exceeds the specifications for the LR ATF. Seems to work fine 30000 km driven after the mega flush.
So it comes down to whether you a. trust the vendor to list the correct specs, b. buy the LR branded special fluid, c. Buy something which you think is identical (the rumor that LR juice is really Ravenol..) but again you’re actually trusting the vendor.

As a caveat, most gearbox rebuilders will NOT approve a warranty claim on a recon 6HP box if it has red oil in it, regardless of meeting required spec or otherwise...My D3 Build Thread
