Rainbow leak

Afternoon all

Classic timing just before Christmas…

Just spotted a rainbow leak from back left corner of the car on the drive - drive is sloped so the back left wheel is the lowest point of the car when parked so not necessarily coming from that area, may have just run down under the car from somewhere else. Not got under the car yet but any obvious things to look for?

Thinking it’s not brake fluid as that wouldn’t make a rainbow slick would it?

Engine oil, gearbox oil, diff oil… ?

In my unfortunate experience Land Rovers are the most LGBTQ vehicles on the planet - rainbows a plenty on our driveways over the years. With older vehicles I used to regard it as the in-built rust-proofing system, bt the D3 and D4 are less prone to leaks than most JLR offerings.

As Gareth has suggested, did you fill up with diesel recently and might it be the breather pipe due to being parked on a slope? Our last serious rainbow event was when mice had eaten through part of the fuel tank during Covid - every time I filled up it would pi55 out when more than 3/4 full.

May sound dodgy but you could always get down and see what it smells like if it is really bad!

Thanks guys for your suggestions but the answer was somewhat more idiotic…

Got back from carol service and finally had chance to have a good look at the car. Underside looked completely dry… hmm

Opened the boot, and a bottle of oil I keep in there to top up had somehow leaked everywhere onto the rubber load mat. The oil had run down to the back left corner of the mat closest to the boot doors and spilled over onto the carpet, soaked into the carpet and eventually down into the wheel arch and onto the drive Embarassed

What a plonker! Less expensive and worrisome than the other potential sources of an oil leak I guess.

Merry Christmas.
