Rear Drawers Build Project

Firstly, want to thank all those on the forum who've already carried out this build, I've taken ideas from all of you Thumbs Up

I wanted a simple set of drawers for storing essential tools, towing stuff, jack, etc...etc...Not the most experience chippy in the world, so this will be a very simple build.

I used 18mm ply and 18mm wide cut pine, which I then cut down to just over 1m lengths, the bottom of the ply is 100cm x 100cm and the top is 100 cm x 105cm (I got the two ply sheets cut @ B&Q out of one 2.4m piece Thumbs Up )

Height of the box is 12cm or so, didn't want it too high, as I need to have the dog cage in there as well as being able to access my 12v cubby box.....Some pics of the work so far:

You can see I offset the drawers so could drill a hole for accessing the spare wheel winch (Again borrowed idea off this forum Bow down )

Have finished phase 1 for now, so stuck the boot liner on top and cage on top of that to see how see looks . I also have an old picnic rug underneath it, that covers the lower tailgate to protect from the dog.

All in all, quite pleased with an hour or so work on it Thumbs Up Tailgate closes perfectly Thumbs Up

Drawers next, I may cover it in the black carpet stuff, or as the liner is staying in there, may just paint the front of it black Thumbs Up I'm thinking of tacking the boot liner to the top of the box as well

More updates in a few days I hope Thumbs Up

You may end up with raw edges on the drawers or the carcase (depending on how you make the drawers). I used 12 mm aluminium angle from (B&Q) and small screws to make a better edge

The handles are inset and are flight case handles from Ebay.

Right, finished for now - still have some stuff to do, such as handles, edging etc and a couple of areas need to be changed, but quite pleased with how it's looking Thumbs Up

Decided to paint the box black, thought I'd try this before carpeting it to see how it looks - I'm happy with the look. You'll note that the socket extension sticks up a little proud from the base, so I need to get a slightly shorter one I think, although the drawer works fine, you just have to lift it a bit if putting it back in after taking it fully out - You'll note that it's strapped down tot he anchor points in the Disco.

1st Drawer completed, I used some of my foam flooring and cut it to size to line the drawer, this will cut down on any rattling noise Thumbs Up

I placed some draft excluder on the bottom, thought this would help cut down on any marking of the Disco floor

Not overly happy with the fit, but the raised socket extension is causing the right side drawer to lift a little, hopefully this will be resolved when I get a slightly shorter one (I found this one in the bottom of an old tool box Thumbs Up ). Remember I still have to put handles on the drawers and some edging

Finally, everything has been stufed in, managed to get all the essentials in and a few extras Thumbs Up

This has been a quick project, with simplicity and functionality as the main objective - these drawers will not be used on a daily basis, just to carry around all that stuff that's needed every now and again. The right hand drawer also includes towing straps and shackles, but are right at the back.

Only other Censored issue, is that they are too low to fit my D2 bottle Jack Censored Censored (Another thing I got wrong!), hence you can see the original D3 Jack is in instead Censored Censored

Would really appreciate any feedback or suggestions - does the black pain look ok, or should I cover in material? The boot liner does a grand job of covering everything, especially when the lower tailgate is closed and I can still easily access all of my 12v sockets Thumbs Up

Cheers
Iggy

To obviate the need to "lift" the drawers when sliding out, fit a piece of 20mm batten along the underside back edge. This will give a slight incline to the drawer set but it is hardly noticeable and will allow the drawers to clear the lower tailgate. Thumbs Up

A piece of batten on the top of the box to restrict the dog cage will also save you some irritation Laughing You'll end up carpeting the top. Laughing

Shocked Shocked Shocked Such a simple idea, why didn‘t I think of it Shocked

Off now to cut a batten to size Thumbs Up Bow down

Edit: Well that was painless, all done and now drawers sliding without issues, cheers Bill Bow down

Meant to add that the dog gage is strapped down, so doesn't move about at all Thumbs Up
