Rear Wheel Bearing Stuck

Rear Wheel Bearing Stuck

Hi folks, looking for some guidance on how to remove the stuck bearing shell from the rear knuckle.

I have a 10 ton press and wirh the inner races from the hub as sleeves, its not moving. Any idea on how best to proceed at this point ? Many Thanks

You really need a 20 ton press, but apply heat around the knuckle joint then try pressing it out, I have known a few to use a sledge hammer to get them out.

I'll try heat and lump hammer next, i dont have a 20 ton press so hopefully that will work

If it doesn't, do you know if applying a bead of weld around the inner bearing would work in this case, this seems to be another method ive seen being used on thw web?

Not that i have a welding machine mind Rolling Eyes

such a pita the last stumbling block before re-assembly of the whole rear end suspension !

Definitely beyond any tool I have available. Applied lots of heat and hammered like crazy, no movement whatsoever.

Is this likely to be a service an independent garage might offer ? Called KwikFit (only place open today) and they aren't interested unless it's the whole job

Else only option is new knuckles or at the price for two, I could consider a 20ton press, but that seems a gamble I think.

Any local engineering firm that might have one you could call on?

The alternative is to heat the whole thing up again but to then use a freezer spray on the bearing race to try and sharply cool that down.

How about a 3” grinder and grind out a groove then split with a cold chisel. Have done this before with inner races that won’t move. Just make sure you have safety glasses on. Off course assuming you have access for a 3” grinder.
 Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

I use a 30 ton press and even then I've had to add heat as well to shift some of them. I'd be surprised if your 10 ton will get it moving even with heat. You could try as john watson suggests splitting with a decent quality chisel but be careful!

Run some weld around the inner diameter - it will shrink it. What do you have to loose!
 Series one 1949 - in bits, chassis is strapped to the ceiling in my garage (beside the canoe)
LR 90 - In bits
Disco 3 - currently in bits

Thanks everyone, its of to a local workshop tomorrow where they have a 100 ton press.

If they can't press out I'll try the bead of weld and/or a die grinder, and if all fails i'll open walllet and get new knuckles which makes it a very expensive repair..but no choice at this point

Update - took about 15 tons of pressure ....should have got a 20 ton press is moral of the story !!
