Repeated in tank fuel pump failure - why?
Hi, we have a D3, 2004 TDV6 manual transmission which has done just over 100k miles. In the last 4-6 months, the in tank fuel pump has failed 3 times. On the initial breakdown, we replaced the in tank fuel pump, and fuel filter and cleaned the tank etc and after less than 2 months, it went again, we thought it was a faulty part, so got refunded and bought and fitted another pump, now its failed again about a month later.
So now we're thinking rather than a faulty part - could there be something causing this to happen? Any ideas gratefully received!
Thanks
Background: Had Series 2 and D2 in the past. Had the D3 for about 4-5 years, use it daily for commuting and towing a caravan. By no means any kind of professional mechanic, but happy to take things apart and figure it out - it was much easier with the S2!!

Welcome......
Filling in your profile and a hello with some short story about you/motor would be nice...
sorry, to hear that...regarding pump..
Petrol or diesel?
But what brand fuel pump did you buy?
In our business it is a known “thing” with some cheaply manufactured pumps..
Especially when bio diesel or alcohol is in the fuel...
Look at your petrolstation if the add bio “stuff” to their fuels.. and how much...
But also check, if there are no debris and particles in your tank, i presume you checked that first Best regards

Thanks will go do the profile thing now.
Its diesel. Not sure on the brand of pump, but was about £50, need to check, but it was just the pump not the whole assembly. Been careful about fuel since it went the first time, but will check for bio "stuff" - thanks for the tip!
The tank was cleaned out both times, so don't 'think' its that?
For a couple of years it used to do the limp mode thing, esp when towing the caravan uphill. When you turned off the engine, it would reset itself and then be fine. It could do it 3 times in one long trip or go months between issues. One time when it did this in Oct last year, turned engine off and it wouldn't restart - cranked but wouldn't turn over. It was off the road for a few months while we figured it out - bit of research led to the LPFP which was replaced and seemed to resolve the problem, but now seems to have been replaced by this new problem!

You need to fit s genuine pump there around £300 but will last.
Disco-mikey gas stated many times on here that the cheap pumps only last 3 or 4 months before they need doing again I guess you just proved him right.
I fitted genuine over a year ago and have had no issues againAndrew

that is why i asked about the brand....
a pump for 50 quid, can never be of good quality
i know there is a VDO in the VDO aftermarket catalog, i presume that one can be good... since there is more VDO on a D3 from factory on incl the HPFP i believe and the injectors for sure...
site sponsor AF sells it.. aks them about theiur warranty on that one, safes you a 100 quid if that one works..

I tried the 50 quid pump, lasted about 2 months... then bought a proper one, no issues since. Im pretty sure i paid closer to 400 quid at the time, the one on AF is great value.

Thank you
Just a note to thank you all for your help. We have fitted a genuine Brit Part this weekend from a local Landrover parts dealer at a cost of £320 inc VAT and she's back on the Road. Let's hope this is the last we see of this problem 🤞I have no clue what I'm doing, just winging it from one day to the next, hoping for the best!

All genuine LR parts come with a two year warranty regardless of who fitted them . Don’t know about Britpart. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

"genuine Brit Part "
sounds rather "funny" to me... Britpart do a lot of replacement stuff (copied stuff i mean) for me it would be important if it is Geniuine JLR OR the Genuine manufacturer FOR JLR, like VDO maybe?
can be both in the case ofcourse, but for the work involved i wanted to be sure befor installing it.. the BritPart name in itself does not prove anything i am afraid.... but that is my experience with some stuff of them... seen good and bad in the past..
i hope you are lucky this time Best regards

I suppose the question is who makes the Britpart pump?
Whatever the answer to that is I don't know, but I do know the original pump was manufactured by Walbro. and If the Britpart pump was not manufactured by them it's not going to last.
If I recall correctly I think the genuine pump is a Walbro GSS 503, but I am open to correction on the part number.
Finding one (pump only) is another matter, but for the D4 there is a VDO option available @ £120 + vat. For this to work in a D3 you would have to fit a D4 fuel tank. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
