Replacing decaying side steps - any recommendations
The genuine LR steps that were dealer fitted when the car was new need replacing.
Many opinions on here and FB about taking them off and leaving them off - or replacing with slides or more hefty steps.
They do get used for access so do want to replace them. Pleased it wasn't me who spent £800 or whatever they cost - to see how badly they've rusted away in just 8 years.
Does anyone have any recommendations on those they have been impressed with - or those they'd avoid?
Black car so debating going for black steps, rather then the quickly-dull-and-stained silver aluminium.
Most likely plan on putting some form of rust proofing underneath these ones.

Ditto. Right now it's just the drivers door piece that has completely rotted out, but it's only a matter of time for the rest.
Aftermarket seem reasonable and much much cheaper than JLR prices..

Do you really need them? If not, just remove and swap the cut sill plates with someone who wants to fit side steps. That’s what I did on my last D4. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I fitted a set of after market eBay ones. Great quality, you wouldn’t tell the difference between them and OEM. I Did have difficulty getting the old ones off as they were so badly rusted. My brother put his foot through the near side one
You may find you need to hammer a socket on some of the nuts as they may be very corroded.
I snapped on bolt in the captive nut but I think bracket had 4 or 5 others so I wasn’t
Overly concerned.
If you do fit aftermarket ones you may need to “amend” the holes. I had to enlarge one
Of the upper holes as it was just slightly out.
It’s pretty much a case of going slowly, use lots of WD40 and repeat the process of how they came off in reverse for the install…if that make sense??2010 D4 XS

If they lasted 8 years you’ve done well. Mine lasted 5 before my foot almost went through them. Lots of non OEM options much cheaper, but I went for Prospeed rock and tree sliders with step inserts. About the same price as the OEM steps, but much more solid and well made. Very happy with them. Easy to fit, but as others have said getting the existing steps off was the hard part.

Another fan of the Prospeeds with step inserts. I had the LR steps on my previous D4 but went straight for Propseeds on my new D4.

I presume you fitted new brackets as well ? Probably foolish not too ? Which ones did you buy ?
Ordered a kit of EBay , read elsewhere about brackets been left on rather than remove? I’ll clean them up and see and if shot will replace .

One little tip!
Make sure you remove any protective wrap from the metal/aluminium edge and clean it. I left mine on for a bit, peeled it off and left all sticky residue on that was like a dirt magnet. Only thing I found to get it off was petrol and loads of elbow grease.2010 D4 XS

Well one side done , left brackets on as actually not too bad just surface rust. Rubbed down and Put copper grease over them and fitted the new bracket. Some IPA to rub down the chrome and that was that. Will tackle other side tomorrow as I had to a fair bit of cutting and grinding to remove !
