D3 FBH Service`

Does anyone know where I can source the thin gaskets for the FBH they sit beneath the ceramic part?

Well another FBH in a D3 has been restored to fully working condition by means of this guide.

I tackled mine this afternoon (why, in -1c I’ll never know).

bought the gasket set from LR, took it out, split it open, cleaned both the burner and main combustion chamber and put it all back in. Started up the engine first and then ran the circulation pump on test through WTT just to make sure coolant had re-flowed round everything and then fired it up using WTT and watching the normal process.

Fired up first time hardly any smoke at all, then was running so clean I had to listen to the combustion fan and look at the screen to tell it was actually working!

Very very pleased, thank you so much for the guide.

Now I feel justified in buying a remote or SIM card remote starter!

2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Bonatti GreyDiscovery 3

I bought LR004141 which gives you the main rubber gasket and 2 o rings.

They don’t do the other thin gaskets between the ceramic cup and the burner housing unfortunately, so just be careful when you disassemble. Mine were ok when I did it just now.

Ok thanks for the info.

So once I have put mine back together is it possible to run it up before I put it back in?
Would be nice to see if it’s working on the bench!
If so any advice on how would be very welcome.

Hmmm, that is slightly more tricky. There are YouTube videos that show people doing just that, but you would need to have the diesel pump on the bench too, with a bucket of water/coolant and hoses going to it etc, plus a decent 12v battery and then the WTT software of course.

All doable, but not easy if you don’t already have all of that stuff to hand.

If you don’t run it up with coolant in the circuit then it will start and stop pretty quickly as the temperature it monitors (the coolant temp) will rocket as it will be just air. This will then shut it down as it thinks it’s done it’s job.

Yes fair comment, does it use the same fuel pump and also, is the fuel line to the FBH from the tank or is it a spur off the main fuel line somewhere?

The FBH has its own little pump that the FBH talks to and ramps up/down as needed. Not sure of the actual plumbing in the car, apologies. I’ve not taken mine out but I believe it is near the drivers side wheel.

Unless you have a proper test rig you won't be able to test it properly.I would put it back in the car and test it.

hi,

nobody seems to understand that they need to run for 10 minutes minimum EVERY run... otherwise they (glowplug/flame guard) get up poluded very quick... even when rebuild...fresh

most of the problems i read here are due to to short runs... multiple start attemps.... unneccessary fuelpriming...just for trying.. fiddeling and the usal suspect very short drives for a package of sigarettes "around the corner."..

it is easyer to test it in the car than fabricate a sufficient test rig on the bench...

it does NOT work with rubber fuel lines...so you need the proper HP version in correct size (there are two major sizes) for testing.. you need wiring made to the dosing pump, etc.. it needs at least 10 minutes run (that is quite a lot of water needed)
spare battery... as said...

Hi,

I second everything that Harold said above.

My FBH was not working (or working very erratically). I did the blowing method to make it run (just blow a lot in the air intake while it is starting - like a LOT - until puff of smoke comes out)

Ever since it started again, I start following his advice and I never ever ran FBH for less than 10 min, ever (even if I needed to get to my destination and wait a couple of minutes to complete the 10 min) .

Since then, FBH works every time, no question asked. Thumbs Up

edit 1: By the way, at the beginning the FBH used to smoke a little right after start, then smoke goes away. Now, it does not smoke or smell at all. (The only reason I am sure it is working is the noise of its fan and as I am checking live data from diag tool from time to time).

What’s the best method of manually starting the FBH to test it?
I’ve had my D3 for over a year and it has never come on to my knowledge!

This explains a lot about the operation of the FBH, how to test it etc etc.

In short, there are many methods including the 'out of the factory' operation that will see it start when the vehicle is cold enough. If the ambient temp too warm for that to happen, you can trick the sensor in to starting it, or use a w-bus cable and the WTT software.

Although I don't have it, I believe you can also use IID to start it too, but can't be 100% on that.

There is no easy 'on/off' switch for these or 'just add 12v to pin X' - they are electronically started and stopped using either CAN or W bus...
