The kit with all the plugs is LR065237 (was LR023292 )~£36, I can't find a part number for the drain plug on its own.

Great guide,
Also, changed the filter, which was a pain, as, unfortunately, the front and rear filter screws align nicely with chassis cross members. Removing the rear mount bolt and jacking up the transfer case is needed, At 98K miles, oil was still green and smelling "fresh" Filter magnets had a little light fur from gear mesh bedding in etc. Used Millers ATF8. Very Happy

Our cautions with very high milage boxes is that damage can be such that the adaptions have slowly gone outside of the normal range and effectively the gearbox is doing all it can to keep things going. Once reset the gearbox cannot adapt back to this extreme value. This may may trigger a fault or harsh shifts.

With regular ATF changes you can help avoid this and at 54k your gearbox will be fine with an adaption reset.

Thumbs Up

Had my flush and reset done on my ZF8HP with 68k miles on the clock, wouldn't recommend the reset personally. It was less smooth and there was a harsh gear-down when coming to a stop resulting to a slight shunt.

I'm all for fluid changes, but wouldn't mess again with a reset.

Out of an abundance of caution, can I just confirm that the transmission fluid change process is the same for the ZF8 box fitted when paired with the SCV6 motor?

Thanks. Thumbs Up

Did the transmission fluid change on my SCV6 yesterday at 39K miles. The fluid that came out wasn't quite black, but was dark. I followed the procedure here in full and cleared the adaptions at the end of the process with the IID tool. I used ZF 8 Lifeguard; $130 for 7 liters delivered from Amazon. At that price and with a service internal of maybe 4-5 years I'm not interested in saving a few quid and experimenting with other brands.

Taking it out for a gentle drive after to bring the box up to temp to perform one last level check and I can confirm that the shifting is noticeably smoother.

Thanks, Robbie, for the guide. It's excellent.

Carried out an oil change yesterday on my 8 speed box. The old fluid was a black as can be and appeared quite thin. Just over 4.5l of Mannol AG60 went in and the gearbox is transformed. I suspect the oil had never been changed in the 112k life of the car.
The plastic drain plug was quite mangled; the 10mm hex was rounded so it was difficult to get off and not possible to achieve the 8Nm to tighten it again. Perhaps someone had tried to change the oil and not succeeded.
Where can I get a new drain plug? I don't want the full LR065237 - 8 SPEED GEARBOX DRAIN PLUG SERVICE KIT - just the drain plug. Any idea?

Cheers

I went to the Audi dealership. They are selling it as an individual item. To my knowledge there are 3 sort of plugs. Best is to take a picture of yours to compare. It was a 5€ item 1 year ago.

Thanks disco4ever.
can you remember which Audi model the plug was from? Part number?
I just went to my local Audi dealer and they could not find anything that looked right.

2007 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Lux Auto Causeway GreyDiscovery 3

Hi everyone, and thanks for the guide. Very informative even if i cannot perform the change myself.
I asked for a quote on a local garage (that also does my MOT and some other jobs) they quoted me around 400 euros for the transmission oil change, mainly because the 9,5 litres of fluid. Rolling Eyes
I also asked for all differential fluid change. (Front, rear and transfer case).. all in all around 1000 euros.

My questions is: D3 2007 just turned 315000km (~195000miles) the last 20k ran by me in the last 2 years.
Should i do that change on that price? Better wait? Too expensive? (I have no idea on that, since most work i have done myself in the past)

Thanks for the info
