Rust prevention - side steps
Have just taken the steps off...with the help of the angle grinder!
Thankfully the corrosion due to the steps is early stage. Sills seem solid, unlike the steps!
It'll probably cost as much to get new plastic as it would for replacement steps, so wondering what people reckon is the best way to treat the paint before mounting the replacements?

I am going to strip the trim off as in another (https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/passing-time-187548.html)
post and treat any rust or add some prevention. So I would be interested in the approach here. An honorable defeat is better than a dishonorable victory.” ― Millard Fillmore

I’ve been using Por15 rust killer for a few years. Good results. Got it from Frost.

Best cure for sidesteps, is to take them off and throw them in a skip! Richard

Agree. Took mine off last week. If I hadn't bought replacement steps I wouldn't bother putting them back on.
So I'm changing the brackets and steps. Rear bolt snapped on the OS and had to be carefully drilled out and retapped. Haven't tackled the brackets on the NS. Hoping these will be easier based on the fact this step contained less rust
Just the start of some areas of surface rust at the rear on the OS (pleasantly surprised for a 15yr vehicle) so ordered some Dinitrol and their rust converter. The rust converter is more for the exposed bottom seam
Job for this weekend.

I wax the inner sills with ML and the outer with Drohnex 445 - both by Dinitrol. I’ve been using it for years on all my cars, trucks and vans of all ages. It is good stuff and will protect it for years. If there’s any surface rust, abrade it back and treat it with Converust (brush applied for outer panels and aerosol with a lance for inner sills and box sections).
I’ve had steps on my LR4 for 6 years and despite the muck and bullets the north Highlands throws at it, the sills are in tip top condition.

To add to my previous post, I decided to remove the sidesteps and take a peek as it’s been three years and 50,000 miles since I last checked.
It just goes to show that sidesteps are safe to install provided you spend some time and a little money on corrosion prevention.
