Shudder / Judders from my D3 07 Auto

My D3 has recently started shuddering / juddering as if its in the wrong gear.. Big Cry

If I give it more gas it goes away, and sets off normal. It seems to do it more when setting off slowly, like when arriving upto a mini roundabout and slowing, but not actually stopping as its all clear then giving it some gas to carry on...

It will happily pull up a steep hill in 3rd without any judders......

I have had new CV boots and a front diff oil leak the past few months...

Before I shell out on taking this in, anything I can check / try at home?

Sounds like what I am experiencing at the moment, do you get a judder in the steering wheel occasionally to? Mine is intermittant like yours, sometimes when slowing for roundabouts it will do it until I come off the brake and do it again. I replaced the front brake pads and discs which cured it for a while, then I had my new alloys balanced again as that wasnt helping. Its still happening as it turns out to be the front bushes on the wishbones, the local mech had it up on the lift and showed me the play there was in the bushes by putting a bar behind them and giving it a wiggle. Apparntley there should be very little wiggle! So, booked in next week for TLC Sad

Got car back from the garage today, with a £660 bill! Which isn't to bad for the parts and labour. Two new bushes and wishbones, turns out my right side front calliper was missing a bolt aswell! Close one. Drives a lot better, no juddering and only a very slight pull when on the motorway as it needs the 4 point wheel alignment doing, but I'm waiting to get some new tyres before I pay for that.

How did you get on?

I don't think it's that, as it pulls like a train up hills in 4th doing 2000 rpm.

It's only occasional and feels more through the front end.

Certainly sounds like TC!

If you want to get more miles out of it then yes a new TC or in the short term a flush and some Dr Tranny!!!

When I am in the mood in spending around £1000 I will get one.

What actually happens when the TC "breaks" - my warranty won't hold up unless its a mechanically failure.

I have had a flush already last year and dr tranny added. This was maintenance and not due to a fault.

I know my suspension needs some TLC, and when driving slowly with windows down I get a rubbing from brakes.

It's only slow speeds under 30 and after braking

My TC problems were fine above 1800 RPM.

The extra speed in the engine increased the transmission fluid pressure which locked up the TC.

I am worried it's TC but really hope it's not.

What tests can I do to try and give me a better idea?

I have just been out and the car will happily set off from a standing start in sand mode and 3rd gear on a slight hill. No wobbles or juddering.

What I would do is find out it it's speed related or revs related.

If you always get the judder at 30MPH, regardless of what gear you are in then it's unlikely to be TC. You might want to get someone to look at the mounts for the drive shafts as a suggestion.

Find a decent length of road and use "Command Shift" to experiment - Maintain the same speed but change the gears.

If you notice that you get the judder and "surging" revs floating up and down under light load - for example going up a gentle hill then increase or decrease you speed and use "Command Shift" to maintain the revs around the problem area to check this out. If you get the problem at the same revs in different gears (Typically this was more obvious in higher gears for me 4/5/6.) the problem is on the engine side or input into the auto box - I would bet on TC.

How many miles have you done, and how much towing have you done?

Regards,
Stephen

Well I am none the wiser now really, done a full tank of diesel since Friday and driven it on various roads, carious speeds, in auto, sport and command shift....

On Friday had it doing it at between 1700-2200rpm and around 30mph and this was when I was light on the throttle. I couldn't seem to get it doing it if I was at 30mph and in another gear so higher or lower revs or doing the same revs in another gear so slower or faster.

Today I have been up to the north east over some crazy A roads, with tight bends and after going round the tight bends it seemed to be really bad, doing it in any gear and any speed until the roads straightened out and it settled down. Big Cry

On the plus side - I am hoping Flack will work his magic some time soon Bow down
