(Solved) Cross bar distance options

Hi All,

I am looking to mount a specific piece of equipment on the roof of my Disco 4 but it seems that the cross rail kit on the newer Discos is only able to be set at predetermined distances.

I need a distance of 800mm between the centre of the cross bars but it looks as though the nearest you can get to this is 750mm as the bars have to lock into the gaps in the roof track system.

Had anyone got any suggestions as to how I can work around this?

If you use bars other than the Genuine Land Rover ones, you can position them wherever you like in the T-Tracks; they are not restricted to the cut-outs in the front-to-back bars.

I do not rate the Genuine Land Rover bars due to limited useable width and the problem you have run into.

Thule bars are compatible with the correct foot pack. Thumbs Up

Use the Thule Aerobars, or similar?

Wider than the OEM bars (as the bars go beyond the feet - so youncan mount things closer to the edge of the car) and you can set them at whatever separation spacing suits you.

Not my image, but you get the idea.

Hi Woolmeister,

Thank you for the quick reply, looking at the Thule bars online it seemed as though they would have the same issue as the OEM ones. Have you used the Thule kit yourself?

Just thinking out loud as not sure what you are trying to achieve exactly.

As they will only lock in predetermined holes what if a set of extended roof rails used up font and a different cross bar fitting from thule, would that give the extra distance required Question

Yes, I have both types of bars: Land Rover and Thule.

For the Thule kit, you will need:

Kit 3027 Fixpoint XT
Thule Rapid System 753
Whichever bars you want to use (wing, square, or aero)

Note that if you choose their "WingBar Edge" style bars, you may not have as much flexibility over where you can position them. I have not used this style of bar but Chopcat on here may have.

The Thule Rapid System 753 feet allow you to position the bars wherever you want on the T-Tracks. Thumbs Up

Note that if you want to have one bar positioned at the very back of the car, the longest bars you can fit are the Thule 127cm ones. The 135cm ones will not allow you to push the bar all the way to the back of the T-Tracks. If you wanted the bars 800mm apart - in the middle of the T-Tracks - you should be fine with the 135cm ones.

The Thule ones have a usable width of 135cm (or 127cm if you get the shorter ones).
The LR bars have a usable width of between 85cm and 90cm, depending on their location, fore and aft (the distance between the T-Tracks is narrower at the back of the car than it is at the front).

The Thule bars also have a higher load rating, IIRC.

Having said that, I currently have the LR ones fitted, which do an adequate job of supporting my sea kayak rack:
