TDV6 Injector replacement

EU3 covered here. EU4 similar, but with different fuel pipes
This is required to replace all 6 injectors. If only doing the odd one, then a full strip as done here may not be needed Thumbs Up

Start with this

Unbolt coolant rail

Remove coolant pipe. Clamp pipe to minimise loss of coolant
Undo fuel pipes from HPFP

Remove injector plugs, oil pressure sensor, and the knock sensor. Unclip injector harness from fuel rail and move out the way

Gently ease the leak off pipe clips out the injector body. Be careful not to break the leak off pipe. It can be very brittle...

Remove leak off pipes and metal fuel pipes

At this point, I remembered the battery and engine wiring loom got in the way... Embarassed

Check for copper washers. If they are stuck to the injector, all is well. If they are still in the head, they will need to be removed

Clean he injector seats, to ensure a good seal when fitting new injector. I used an 8mm socket, on a long extension, wrapped in a clean rag, put it n the hole, and wiggled it, to clean all the carbon off.

Freelander TD4 injector seals are a perfect fit, and much cheaper than the £30 (each Shocked )for a new fitting kit

This next part is optional, dependant upon having the clips...

The plastic clip holds the clamp in the correct position when fitting the injector, to ensure the fuel pipes line up correctly.

If they are not there,cc it the injector with the bolts finger tight, and fit the metal pipe onto the rail and injector, also finger tight. Then tighten injector fully, and tighten fuel pipe. Repeat for the remaining 2 injectors

When fitting the leak off pipes, a pair of long nose pliers are invaluable.

Once done, it is exactly the same for the other side, though the fuel pipes run over the injectors, so get in the way a little. It helps to remove the battery box to improve access Thumbs Up

Bleed the fuel system, and crank away until it fires up. A little smoke is to be expected upon first start up Thumbs Up

Huge difference Thumbs Up

Went from being VERY lumpy on 1st start up of the day, and these readings:

To idling away beautifully, even with only 3 glow plugs working (robbed the fuse for something else) and these readings

After idling for 10 mins or so, it still idles much, much better than before, but with injector comps of:

The engine management does take around 30 miles or so to adapt, so will run them for a bit and see if it improves Thumbs Up

Excellent thread Mike.

Thumbs Up

Any chance of a minor leak on injector 5 / cylinder 3 as injector 6 / cylinder 6 is backing off too?

No leaks that I can see. As said, will put a few miles on it, and see how they settle down Thumbs Up

Crucial test will be to see how it starts 1st thing tomorrow Thumbs Up

Good job Thumbs Up How often do the injectors seize in place? Can they normally be removed by hand without the recommended LR tool?

How did you get the injectors at the rear of the engineout? I found them really awkward and left them in.

After a few miles, they are looking like:

Oddly, with the old injectors, the values stayed at 1000 for a good 80-90 seconds, and it ran very rough. Now, they will read almost instantly

Had a leak off clip fall out, and pour diesel everyplace. That was replaced with another, that fell out again...
Put a new clip in this time, and all seems to be well

Thumbs Up

Allan, mine were in he engine for best part of 10 years, and they were a little tight, but they all came out OK.

Ekkypoo, drivers side bank all came out fine. Rear one on passenger side needed the engine wiring loom moved out the way Thumbs Up

Mikey, What were the reasons for changing them in the first place? Did you go for used or new? and how many did you change?

I have problems starting at the moment needing lots of cranking. Once running its fine. Also, economy has gone down about 4-5 per gallon and smokes alot when idle for a minute or two. One of mine Injector 5 is reading 600 ish and the others about 1350-1400. Still drives nice and smooth though. Any ideas?
Im a mechanic and have Snap On Solus Ultra should anyone need help.
