TDV6 Oil Consumption

Now I have mentioned on another post that mine has consumed 1 litre in the last 3000 miles.

The dealer response is that they are allowed 0.5 litres per 1000 miles or something running in.....all very well but mine has done 48K.

It was topped up several times this year and I didn't think too much about it and now can't remember exactly how many litres I put in it between 30 and 45K.

So I thought I might ask on here what people are experiencing as this is the first time I have ever had to put oil in a run in diesel of any brand between services.

Cheers

It does not sound right to me. Mine is coming up to 90k and uses virtually no oil at all. It used oil up to about 30k miles, but never more than 2 litres between services.

My car spends a good deal of its life on the open road/motorway.

I also think it sounds excessive...as my vehicle is also mostly motorway miles and hence runs at decent load but not worked too hard.

Hmmm time for some oil analysis I think.

Cheers Gareth

25,000 mls since new...
1 ltr added at 6,000 mls, then another 1/2 ltr put in yesterday. I understand this level of oil consumption to be fairly normal?

The other thing to bear in mind Spotter, is that the dipstick is a crap design and is very difficult to read accurately. A small variation in the angle of the vehicle seems to make a big difference in the reading. Also, it takes suprisingly little oil to get from the bottom of the dipstick to the top.

So perhaps do a careful series of measurements over the next few hundred miles before getting too worried.

Obviously the poor starting may be related, but I can't see how unless the oil is contaminating the cylinders overnight. If this were the case I would expect lots of blue smoke at startup.

point taken Gareth, don't really have anywhere flat at home to check it poroerly myself.....but have noticed how hard it is to read the damn thing. It woudl be a lot simpler if it told you when to add half a litre of oil as other makes do. Whistle

It doesn't seem to smoke on start up even when struggling which surprised me...certainly if there is any it has cleared by the time I have released the key and got out. I have never noticed any blue smoke at all.

just worried as all of a sudden it is consuming more fuel than usual, lots of oil and having problems starting so obviously I see the worst Rolling Eyes ....and all since its service.........

I've only done 10.000 miles, so not yet nicely "run in", but have used virtually NO oil at all!!!

Diesel yes - oil no.... Rolling with laughter
