Thule 938 VeloSpace Tow Bar Carrier

Hi All,

Yes another tow bar/cycle carrier question and I’m sure I’m probably doing something wrong.

Recently bought a nearly new detachable tow bar and Thule 938 VeloSpace 2 bike carrier.

Two things really.

1) When attaching the bike rack to the tow bar the arm to tighten onto the tow bar only goes so far and won’t go any further. Anyone else had this problem?

2) When trying to connect the electrics the socket will not engage because of a plastic part on the Thule socket, I’m thinking of just cutting it off or do I need an adapter in order to give the socket more room to twist to lock?

It’s like the tow ball is too big for the mechanism to tighten onto this then stops the arm from fully engaging in the locked position.

I’ve loosened the adjustable screw all the way off and all the way on and it still won’t let the handle come down all the way to lock.

This is driving me mad. Lol

Afraid no help, I have the Thule 9503 and it has a threaded bolt to tighten onto the tow bar. It was a good fit for me.

Similarly, I had no issue with the electrics connection. Perhaps take a photo of the socket and the plug to illustrate the issue?

Do you think the friction pads in the cycle rack, which tighten on to the tow ball may need adjustment/been incorrectly fitted?

I have used a Thule rack for many years and find the final couple of inches of pressing the lever down seems like somethig is going to snap...... nothing has (yet!)

If its a 13 pin socket, the flap should open towards the middle (inside) of the car.

I have the sibling to yours, the only difference is I have the 7-pin socket.

I thought like you that there was something wrong with the attachment arm and also loosened the adjustment screw. But the screw is only there to limit sideways play of the rack so that has no effect on the tightness of the arm. The answer can be that you need to use an excessive amount of force, much more than you think is healthy. The manual states that you need to use a force that equals the weight of 47 kg. So you just need to press harder, beyond what you think would be necessary. That was the solution for me.

I have a friend that bought a rack at the same time as I did and he had the same experience.

At the end, I cannot of course guarantee that this is your problem and that there is a risk that you damage something by doing what I did, but I wanted to at least share my findings to perhaps provide a solution.

Hi All,

Got it sorted, faulty mechanism on the bike carrier.

The wiring plug needed a slight modification which sorted out the problem.
