Doing Rear Brakes, Question.
Having done the front discs and pads I now want to do the rears later this week.
it's an auto which leads to my query, maybe I'm missing the bleeding obvious, but;
Obviously the parking brake will be off and the fuse out. But to remove the ignition key it needs to be in park, so how do I keep to hub free so that I can rotate it by hand? Will I be able to turn it 'against' the diff?Arthur.

Check here - you can overcome the mechanical lock in the gear lever to move it into neutral.

Thanks chaps
Excellent, thanks for the link MikeO, that answers the question.
Thanks too Dave, my reading is that the car needs to be in sleep mode before you fiddle about with these things, and I wasn't sure that putting the key back in part way through was a good idea. That's what I did when doing the fronts, it's the EPB that made me wonder with the rears.
Thanks again chaps, I knew the answer would be here somewhere Arthur.

Pretty much the same way as the D3. If you have need to release the gearbox use the mechanism under the cup holders.

I've a decent, 3 ton, trolley jack with 3 ton axle stands so I can get the whole rear end off the ground.
Does that make any difference, does it offer an alternative, to the method linked above, for allowing the hubs to turn freely??Arthur.

Yes both sides up at once will rotate freely with no need to mess about with gearbox

Thanks very much gents, that will certainly make things considerably easier.
Just curious though, so, in park isn't the transmission 'engaged' so to speak? It's still turntable by hand?
Never had an auto before.Arthur.

If both rear wheels are raised, the rear differential will allow the wheels to turn in opposite directions, but that does not matter.
