Turbo Recon

A good few years ago there was a mild panic on here when Turbos started letting go and Land Rover had none in stock. Rolling Eyes

Being totally paranoid I found one second-hand on eBay that the main parts collectors on here missed. Whistle So a low mileage (hopefully!!) Turbo was got for under £100 and stored away carefully wrapped up in the dry. Now that Ruby is fast approaching 160K on her original Turbo it has got me thinking that maybe I should have this reconditioned ready to fit should the need arise. I would be really p!ssed if I paid all the labour to fit this Turbo only to find it is Censored and still have to buy a new one and do the job all over again..... Crying or Very sad

So can anyone recommend a company to recondition and/or test a non blown Turbo?? Is it worth doing? Wink

You can buy new internals(CHRA), but it is pointless as you can fit a new CHRA into yours should it fail.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

What is

CHRA ?

I have used Turbo Technics for replacements
http://www.turbotechnics.com/www/?page_id=65
These are state of the art ones.....
not pre used Ebay items that may or may not be any good

& here
http://www.turbocharger-solutions.co.uk/
a colleaugue has bought a couple from here & says good words

I am not convinced that a turbo can be stripped & refitted with new rotary bits as a DIY excercise
But I am sure I will be told otherwise...

Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

I think he means you just buy a new cassette assembly, basically cases reused and spinny bits come as a complete package.

I've just put a CHRA in mine easy to do once you manage to get the exhaust snell off,the only down side I could see is you don't get new variable vains that's separate from the CHRA and not sure if you can get that part separately I would be interested to know if you can Thumbs Up

You most certainly will, you don't scrap a car because it needs a new engine or a new battery, it's nearly as easy to change the CHRA (that's the bit that wears and usually fails through lack of oil) as it is to fit a battery once you've got it off.
I have changed five on different vehicles and they are all still going strong, one after 5 years. This is all that most turbo re-conditioners do, clean the housing up and fit a new Charge Housing Rotary Assembly. The CHRA isn't cheap, about half the price of a turbo and you don't get the actuator.

I am a marine engineer and the turbo's on our engines are always just a cartridge overhaul

Saying that had one sent this week and the quote to do is £75K and that is with a discount 30% for choosing the longer service time of 120 days.

Just the cartridge weighs 500kg but can exchange it quiker than on a disco, 4hrs Laughing
There is no I in team, but there are five in Individual Brilliance

Disco gone, emigrated to a VW Amarok
