tayaste's guide - how to - heated steering wheel

How to update Disco Steering wheel to the heated.

Tools needed

Long nose pliers
Torx T20
Philips Screwdriver
16mm socket and ratchet
Air bag removal tool

Parts

Heated Steering wheel - LR017034
Clockspring - LR018556
Switch Pack - LR014308
Heated wheel connecting wire - here http://www.disco3.co.uk/shop/heated-steeri...r-p52.html
I went for the plug and play version from the shop, much easier.

First center the steering wheel

Next Disconnect Negative on the battery

Next remove the H-trim, pull from the bottom to release the four clips

Remove the T20 torx from next to the park brake release

Pull gear selector upwards to release

Starting at the cup holders pull up to release the gear surround from its clips

Remove tray from under the ashtray and the HVac unit via 4 T20 torx

This allows you to remove the 2X T20 torx screws and remove the ashtray, a bit of force was needed here.

Using the wire from Martins shop we want to break into the cig adapter to supply power to the new clock spring

Disconnect the orange multi plug on the back of the 12v supply this is where you will take the feed to power the clock spring

Run the cable up through towards the nav unit

Using the air bag removal tool, remove the air bag

Disconnect the earth and 2X multi plugs using the long nose pliers

Now disconnect the white multi plug from the top of the clock spring

Remove the 16mm steering bolt

Check and note alignment of wheel to splined shaft

Remove wheel

Undo the 2X T20 torx from under the cowling

Now you can remove the upper cowling and drop the lower to access the clock Spring and its four Philips screws.

Now's a good time to tape your clock spring up to maintain centered

Remove old clock spring using Philips screwdriver on the four screws and disconnect the two multi plugs

Route the wire you've installed from the cig lighter through the cowling

Connect the two multi plugs to the new clock spring and the new wire you've just routed

Refit new clock spring and then refit cowling

refit ashtray and gear surround

Now to the steering wheel.

We want to keep the RH switch pack

Remove the four torx t20 from the rear, these will be used in your new wheel

Now remove RH switch pack, it pulls straight up.

Disconnect the multiplug behind the switch pack

Now remove brass weight from old wheel. 3X t20 Torx

Transfer the weight to your new wheel

Now fit both switch packs including your new one with the heated wheel button and connect the wires.

Refit the 4 Torx

Now remove the new clock spring clamp

Now re-fit wheel paying attention to the centering alignment marks to where they were previously. Refit 16mm steering wheel bolt.
Plug in all the cables, you can't go wrong here they only fit in the right socket.

re-connect earth and the 2X air bag multi plugs. Then re-fit air bag to the wheel.

Re-connect car battery.

Refit H-Trim and all the other trim

Then, fire it up.

If I've missed something let me know and I'll update it Thumbs Up

Good work, Steve. Must say, it's making me want to upgrade - not for the heated wheel, as that doesn't really interest me at all, but just for the sake of it. Laughing

Considered that also, for the flappy panels, but TBH, I prefer the style of the D3 ones. Too many other things taking priority anyway. Thumbs Up
