Please enlighten us then, in what way is it "no good"?

Slider, do tell us more: in what way is it 'no good'?
How long is 'long term'?

The mechanical implications interest me, unlike the luddite refusal to accept technology that clearly works!

I read recently that the constant stop-start puts far more strain on the engine - up to 10 times the number of starts over the life of the engine. The standard white-metal shell bearings suffer over time. Apparently, there is a new generation of harder, self lubricating shell bearings coming on-stream but it's doubtfull that they are yet in the mass-produced engines . I turn mine off most of the time.

When LR added stop/start to the Discovery, did any of the core engine hardware change, e.g. Starter motor, main bearing etc?

Me too worked in engine development...

start & stop is devastating for engines:
1. Lack of lube on bearing
2. Increased thermal fatigue stress on the motors

the scope of the start & stop system is only for pollution reduction at the expense of engine life

Such as 0W30 oils with low HTHS, less hydraulic losses but increased engine wear!!!

Please switch off S&S and use oils 5W40 with HTHS > 3,2

Awful system, hate it from day one. Wish mine could be turned off too without the huge orange light on the dash.

Way I look at it is I am only ever going to have the car with a warranty, so if it goes wrong then LR will be dealing with it. I quite like it, and if I don't want the car to stop I just crawl that's all.

Seriously, just go under the bonnet, locate second battery and pull like hell at the connector. It will fail. If you ever get a problem, claim it as a poor crimp on terminal at factory!
Mine is so annoying. It can still be stopping while its trying to start again,

Over the past 3 or 4 weeks my stop/start hasn't operated.

Done combinations of long, short, slow and fast runs in hot and cold weather with and without heavy battery drain but it still doesn't work.

Do you recommend a specific oil if we turn off S&S permanently?

I've run a TD4 Freelander 2 manual with stop/start for 5 1/2 years, it's done 63000 miles on a mix of mostly short (14 miles) commutes and the occasional long journey and it's still on it's original battery and starter motor and stop/start still works.

I've got it on my Discovery and I'm quite happy with it, at the moment.
