Towed with the D3 for the first time today - Engine Fault!
Had to take our caravan to the dealer for some work today and embarked on my first D3 (2008 SE with 129k miles) tow and actually my longest journey yet in my recently purchased TD5 replacement.
All was going well, the D3 giving a nicer tow than the old D2 with less buffeting effect from passing trucks. Cruised up the A1(M) and was about 10 miles from the final destination when I started to slow and the message ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT popped up on the dash. Slowed to about 35mph and pulled off at the next junction and switched everything off. Tried to restart but nothing, wouldn't try and turn over.Switched off and paused for 30 seconds and on this attempt engine started, warning message had gone and I gingerly completed the leg to drop the caravan off with do more drama. Unhitched and sorted the caravan out and had a breather to settle myself for the homeward run. Then proceeded to drive 65 miles without any problem at between 65 & 70mph.
Obviously I need to get the fault code read but is there any common explanation to this? I hope it is not the start of unreliable running.

Had similar problem with my old D3, only ever happend whilst towing and only whilst climbing long hill.
would go into limp home mode, would pull in when could, turn engine off wait few minutes and start again No warning light on? and would drive NO Problem. Take it to dealers and no faults stored? To cut a long story short and many visits to dealers and thanks to Landrover assist diagnostics, Turbo was over heating? dealer tried changing actuator first and few other part but on joy, New turbo Fitted and no more problems

Gave the Disco a blast up the steepest hill around here and it was fine, couldn't provoke the ESF to show up again.

Towed the caravan for the second time today, after Geoff had looked at the fault codes and reset. We could see PO had fitted new intercooloer pipe but wonder if the fault codes werent cleared afterwards. I tried to provoke the fault today whilst towing my Adria. No repeat of two weeks ago, fingers crossed clearing the error code has sorted it.

When my intercooler hose was split it ,The engine would give that fault when it was very cold (-6). Changed it and a hell of a difference. It must've been like that from when I bought it oct31.
Lots of black smoke on acceleration and sometimes no power for a split second.
