Reconditioned engines

Currently have a D3 in with a cylinder head off. Picked it up from the engineering place after being skimmed and got chatting about a recon 2.7 they are repairing for another customer

I don't know the whole story, but it had been supplied by an engine reconditioning company, and apparently the crank was tight to turn

They said the block had been line bored to accept new main bearings, but had been bored too high in the block, moving the centre of the crank too high, and all piston heights were different...
A good block was sourced and fitted with new main + big end bearings and new rods
Something had happened to the cam caps, and needed 2 replacement heads, along with everything else needed for the rebuild

The cost of rectification for parts and labour was over £8,000, and that didn't include removal or refit of the engine to the car Shocked

Had always wondered what you get for your £3k supply and fit engine Confused

What's happened in the world of Re-manufactured engines in recent times that has made it so expensive?

I know I'm going back many years but I had a 2.8 Granada engine rebuilt for about £300. A lot of money back then but only about 20% of the value of the car. It was a superb engine which I went on to cover another 40k miles before I sold it on. The body work gave up long before the new engine.

I appreciate engines have evolved somewhat, but the cost seems to have morphed into the in uneconomical repair category Big Cry

Late 70's early 80's I was fitting new short engines to most Ford cars and I think the dearest one supplied and fitted was £400.00. Its gone stupid now, the car manufactures can make more money today by keeping supply of new parts and engines almost to themselves .

Flack Thumbs Up

They said the same about the K series. And the Td5. And the 300TDi...

I wouldn't class a skim of 0.006" as a rework, just a clean of the mating face Thumbs Up
