Hardware's Cheap & Cheerful Fire Extinguisher mount.

Been meaning to do this for ages ... not clever having the Fire Extinguisher rolling about in the boot. Not least because, on our 2015 Italy road-trip, the eldest lad dragged a suitcase out of the boot only to trigger a big release of white powder. Deffo NOT the recreational type. Laughing

I had a suspicion the cubby cover for the standard jack hidey-hole wouldn't be rigid enough unless reinforced, so bought a spare off a forum member.

Thought about using plywood and fibreglass resin to stiffen the cover but opted for a piece of nylon chopping board.

Cut it to shape - PITA as there are no straight edges and the cover itself has a couple of curved areas that aren't obvious until you try and get something to fit flush within it.

Stripped the original sound-proofing layer from the cover.

shaped nylon - I cut some grooves in it to allow it to flex better.

Thickness wise, it's about 9mm

Used this stuff to glue it in place ...

Left it about an hour to cure then found right places for holes ...

Used a couple of 4mm RivNuts shoved in the holes from the rear so the machine screws have somewhere decent to screw in to.

Fixed the cradle, as came with the Fire Extinguisher, to the panel

Glued the sound-proofing back.

Re-fitted the jack cover ... fitted Fire Extinguisher in cradle

Job Done!!

I have a shopping bag full of other car stuff (rags, nitrile glove boxes, BLS, etc. etc.), a 2 kg extinguisher standing in the bag and a Land Rover cargo net I bought from a gentleman on this forum keeping it all in place in the back.

(A solution for those us who are less handy Thumbs Up )

Can't do it for mine as double dog crate in the back, but will be looking at adding one in the front footwell somewhere at some point

Nice - I like it! Wouldn't work with my drawers in the back though Sad

I've always attached mine to the dog guard but my Dad (was a fireman for 40 years) always moaned at me and said a) they're not big enough for a proper car fire and b) they should be in the front of the car, to hand, like Iggy said Thumbs Up

Have been thinking about the very same thing for a while and was going to buy a spare cover as a prototype and keep the original if I was to ever sell the car and revert it back to standard (not that I’m planning on doing that anytime soon).
I had thought about the other size as well fixing some kind of strap to hold a first aid kit there, both that and the fire extinguisher handy to locate quickly and easily if the need ever arose!
Cracking job you did there!

First Aid kit will be going on top of the lid of the cubby hole above the Jack access. The extinguisher is too big and heavy to go there without effectively making that storage space inaccessible.

For next road trip, another extinguisher will be added in front seat area. I know passenger seat, fixed to front of the runners, is the "proper" position BUT I can already hear SWMBO complaining I've strapped a bomb underneath her, so will see if I can do the driver's seat version. IIRC, Mr Brain has done that.

The “official” mount point is the ledge of the passenger seat. LR has a 1 kg extinguisher that mounts there.

Hi, I was thinking of putting one at the front of the passenger seat. I was a bit worried the 1kg might be a bit big has anyone fitted one there?

Have the original JLR 1Kg (VPLAS0041) one mounted in front of the passenger seat on my D4 - on the HSE the mounting bracket is attached to the seat frame and moves backwards/forwards together with the seat. SWMBO has not complained so far Very Happy

I'll have a look BUT ... might be a bit of a complication if it were to go off as a result of a side-impact ? I'm not talking about hard enough to split the cannister ( because if it did, you wouldn't be in a position to care Sad ) just thinking the trigger might get, er, triggered.
