Just read this from the start, wow! I hope you have a big shed to keep the bits in, or like me when I restored my S2a, you have a garden full of ‘automotive art’ 😂
Seriously getting stuck in there. I agree with the previous post, a Karcher or similar drain blaster is ideal to clean out Land Rover chassis.

Awesome project and thanks for keeping us updated
I'd like to know how you keep on the best side of your wife concerning doing the messy work on your block paving!Kev

Gareth,
Re the pressure washer - I'm on that. Looking at some thing like this:
Waiting for them to get back to me to see how I can connect it to my Karcher washer.
The garage is now full! Exhaust is on the lawn, some parts are living in the back of my Honda!

I just clean up at the end of the day and put down a piece of ply if there might be oil/grease. The other side of the bargain with my wife is that the family car budget does not include paying others for work I can do. So bluntly I can stop working on the drive and she can keep the car she has forever as the car savings fund gets wasted on paying labor. Its quite easy when you put it in the simple 'no newer car' terms.

Yeah the half shaft orifices are a weak spot and are regularly missed even by testers, so well spotted.
Are you going to galvanise it? You have gone this far and it would make sense, and add value too if budget allows.
Top work fella, (but please, no more holidays)
PROFSR G,
Galvanizing is on the cards. However I can only find one place in Scotland that will galvanize a used chassis. All the others stated they don't do them any more. Also they want £350 just for galvanizing. I need to get it blasted 1st then deliver. More investigation to do on this front.

I think Disco_Mikey galvanised his chassis when he did the TDV8 conversion. Perhaps he can offer a suggestion as it's not all that long ago. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Presumably you have tried Scottish Galvanisers in Glasgow?
We sometimes have to get steel galvanised and I have found it much cheaper to try and piggy back on to someone else's order. Last job we had was two 7m long 200/90mm channels - SG quoted me over £300 for the job as a standalone, yet it was less than £40 when added to a job that the steel supplier was already having done. Might be worth trying to find a friendly steel building manufactirer/fabricator and seeing if you can work a deal with them.Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

I think the issue is that metal platers/hot dip galvanisers don’t want their tanks contaminated with dirt from old items.

Scottish Galvanizers were an abrupt no due to mud in chassis. Didn't even get past the lady who answered the phone and said 'who do you want to speak too'. She was adamant they do not do LR chassis any more. Suspect some one sent one with 20 years of off roading silt in the bottom.
With that in mind I have been playing with a cheap 'inspection' snake camera to inspect the inside of the chassis rails. But discovered I need a memory card adaptor to down load to the PC. However seemed relatively clean.Series one 1949 - in bits, chassis is strapped to the ceiling in my garage (beside the canoe)

So while I am awaiting on a snake lance for the pressure washer I decided to look at the suspension height sensors. I had to grind off the mounting screw heads to get them off. That leaves the issue of getting out the remains of the screws.
You can drill one out, but the other is hard against the sensor. So next step get the metal ring off so that I can get access. Just need to undo the counter sunk torx screw:
But the screw locates in a little brass collar/insert that looks like it is part of the plastic molding until you try and unscrew the torx counter sunk screw - then the bloody brass insert rotates in the plastic housing.. Arrgh.
Going to try and grind the torx screw head off with a tiny grinding attachment in a dremel. But feel free to chip in with solutions if you have done this before!
So gave up with that and decided to make some progress on the underside of the body with the aim of getting a boost from seeing some physical progress. Worked on the driver side sills.
This is the passenger side to show starting point (didn't take picture of drivers side):
And the driver side with some paint on after de rusting.
In two minds about stripping off the LR applied underseal. Initially it looks good, bit there are more pockets in it than you think that hold water...

Pity this wasn't 6 weeks ago - SG shut down every fair holiday for at least the first week and, whilst closed, empty and clean their tanks. It would have been a good one to get in towards the end of their run
I'll send you the email address of their commercial director by PM - the girls on the sales desk can be a bit 'weegie' at times Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

So got some progress on the height sensors - attacked the torx screw with a grinding attachment in the Dremel and managed to get the metal ring off:
The brass insert into the plastic has a shoulder on it and will drift out to the rear:
One down, three to go. Just need some new brass inserts and either sort the seized screwed in the metal ring, OR find some broken height sensors that I can rob the rings off - feel free to help if you have old height sensors in a cupboard some where!
