Great effort. Would like to know what you plan to use to coat the chassis for future protection?

I will shortly be conducting a similar exercise with mine.

Cheers

Leeho,

I am planning to have it galvanized. However not many galvanizers are happy galvanizing old chassis. Apparently debris from the inside of the chassis blows out of the drain holes and causes adherence issues on the outside. End result - bare patches that have not 'taken' any zinc on the surface. Form what I told it will likely need dipping twice. Still exploring this.

Its not normally a problem if its acid dipped and washed out properly and has drain holes in the right places

Gareth,

I will just reconnect the battery and see what happens/breaks. But not done that yet.

Currently on with getting the mother in laws 19 year old Corsa through its MOT - passed on Friday. Only had to fit a front suspension arm. But now refurbing the wheels so that the tires don't deflate over time. Trying to stop her driving around continually with 10psi in the tires. Neighbours are starting to twitch now I have a second car with no wheels on though...

On other fronts the inverter that runs my lathe & mill let out all the smoke on Saturday. Need to repair it to make the rear diff chassis bush install tool among other things. Did considered a new one until I saw the price. So on with researching repair options.

Looks like a electrolytic capacitor that has gone. Easy fix if that is all but could have a reg gone sc. Do you have a electronic repair shop near? I am sure they could help. Cheers.

Hi Adrian.

Yes I used to work for Cartwrights a trailer manufacturer and we would re gav the older ambulance chassis when they came in for maintenance. It is a pain as you say but very possible if you dip twice. Just watch out for build up of materials as we found this to be a problem around any captive nuts the chassis may have had. We ended up re tapping a lot of them.

But if you find a good galv guy its more than possible.

Good luck anyway looking forwards to further updates!

Had a fair bit of difficulty getting the galvanizing sorted. Most galvanizers are turning down old LR chassis in Scotland. I found one that would do it - £350 +VAT, but I needed to blast it. So instead of two trips that would be three. As the disco is in bits I have no tow car, so each trip costs in van rental. It also runs the risk of the galvanizer not being happy with the blasters job.

Through a forum member I got the contact details of the manager of another galvanizers that don't do LR chassis. After some back and forth we got an agreement. Their concern was the old paint/rust/mud in the chassis causing:
1/. An explosion in the Zinc tank
2/. Contaminating the job and stopping the zinc adhering on the outside

So after sending borescope pictures of the internal of the chassis to show I had got all the mud/loose scale out we had a deal - £300 +vat for blast and galv. But if it doesn't take due to internal contaminates I either accept as is, or pay for a strip and re galv.

Time will tell!
