Seeking advice on our 175k D3 - some questions!

Hey all,

In January I bought a D3 from a forum member on here on behalf of / for my brother, who needed a big safe car for his growing family. As a 2007 D3 with 175k miles he paid around £5k, which is a lot of car for the cash, so he (sensibly) put a few grand aside at the time for any big repairs, to avoid running it on a shoe string.

Three months in and he, and the family, absolutely love the Disco - he’s genuinely delighted with it and it’s now part of the family. We’ve carried out a couple of minor jobs to keep it running well, but here are a couple of head scratchers I could do with some help from the forum gang on please…?!

1. The cabin heater takes a while to get hot, and never gets that hot (using my 08 D3 G4 as a reference). Interestingly, the centre vents (by the nav screen) seem to get warmer than the outer (window) vents which reach lukewarm at best. No obvious fault codes on my IID - any ideas? Not too urgent with summer around the corner.

2. Over last few months I’ve twice picked up the fault P0730-00 (6D) “Incorrect Gear Ratio” on the IID. A search on here brings ominous results, indicating the demise of the transmission Neutral . The trans had a new torque converter fitted in 2019 about 15k miles ago and a megaflush, and it drives fine. No hunting, shuddering etc. and no warning lights. Its not as quite as smooth/quick to shift as my 08 D3, but not far off it. Mindful the car/trans won’t live forever, but would anyone recommend any preventative action or additional steps to try and keep it running nicely for longer? Or just solider on for now… We’d love to get to 200k miles in it.

3. Relating to point 2, if we’re out of luck on the transmission, can anyone advice how much we should start budgeting for a gearbox refurb to address failure when it comes? Just trying to get an idea of magnitude of spend…. £3k? Seems a few on here have had success with ‘Re-Engineered Transmissions’ in Rayleigh, they advertise £895 for a recon D3 gearbox but that seems cheap?!

4. Occasionally (once every few weeks) the below alert randomly pings up when driving along. It’s easily resolved by pulling over, turning the EPB on and off again (it works perfectly), then the message clears. No obvious related faults on IID. Not causing any issues other than annoyance - wondering whether an EPB service / adjustment might sort it out? Unless anyone has any other ideas?

The only other issue is a damp A pillar which will inevitably be sunroof drain related but I won’t ask for any help here as I know there’s already a wealth of info on that on the forum - wish us luck!

Cheers, and thanks in advance for any help or advice offered.

1) likely to be a partially blocked heater core, some have good results doing a core flush.

2) This is most likely an issue in the valve body of the trans, i had the same error on and off until it got worse and will go into limp mode every day. I rebuilt the valve body with new solenoinds, separator plate and sonnax zip kit and its like a new gearbox. Cost me just under $1k AUD so around 550 pounds which is a lot cheaper than a new box.

3) 895 is too cheap, 3k is more like it.

4) worth doing the adjustment first then see how it goes.

X2 on what LoanRangie says. I would also check the linkage pivot on the side of the gearbox as this is a known trouble spot. Check oil level in gearbox.

Hi,

regarding #4 could it be the car thinking the gearbox is in Not in gear or park so you should apply the epb, rather than an issue with the epb
Which could also then be connected to #2

No, P0730 is incorrect gear ratio as per below which is a fault in the valve body.

The P0730 code indicates that there's an incorrect gear ratio in your automatic transmission. The “gear ratio” has to do with the way the torque converter works, and essentially, this indicates that there's a difference between the rotational speed of the input RPM and the transmission output of the RPM.
