Diesel leak from my 08 manual D3

Evening all. My 08 Disco 3 developed a diesel leak just as turned into my road after a 180 mile round trip this evening. It only leaks when the engine is running or the ignition is on, and it's coming from underneath from a point that seems more on the driver's side, near the front. Here's a few pictures. Please can some-one tell me what is likely to be the cause. Thanks.

The fuel filter was changed 4 weeks ago by a garage doing a service. Could it be the new filter maybe?

Yes it look like its coming from that area, its also possible that the water sensor has not been fitted in the right place and when the filter has been turned to lock it in position the sensor has hit the chassis and loosened off. Or could just be a cheap filter thats not sealing correctly.
I wouldnt turn the ignition on as the fuel pump can empty the fuel tank quite quickly.

So today the RAC very efficiently arranged have my D3 taken on a flat bed truck to the garage who last serviced it. The garage said the water sensor had failed independently of them recently replacing the fuel filter and they replaced it.

If you tighten the water sensor up too far is cracks and leaks fuel - not sure why the vehicle needed to be towed - it is diesel not petrol and the small leak is not such an issue. I now carry the small plastic plug that comes with a new fuel filter that is used when there is no water sensor as a precaution if my sensor cracks again.

The garage are saying that tge fault is independant of there work, i just cant see how?

Like you say if the over tightened the sensor and it cracked it would be there fault or if the sensor was fitted wrong it would be there fault. I just dont get how it could fail independantly of there work.

Yes it cannot crack when it is already in - gets cracked when installing a new filter and the sensor is reinstalled in the new filter and over tightened - it is made out of cheap plastic - again a poor LR design.

The other aspect I have found are using after market filters - the profile is wrong at the bottom so so overtighten the sensor to try and stop the leak - so if the sensor is not overtightened so is not broken the filter leaks - ask me how I know all this stuff. At the moment have an aftermarket filter, and after having previously broken the sensor (very expensive) I have removed the sensor and put the bung in.

On a side issue re the sensor etc here in Aust the dealer price for just a sensor is £146. However at the dealer is you buy a fuel filter replacement kit which comprises the fuel filter bracket/housing, the fuel filter, and the water sensor the entire kit is only £134 - so go figure.

Regarding the towing, fuel was pouring out so it couldn't be driven and the RAC decided on the phone that they wouldn't be able to fix it. As to the reason for the fault, my garage said the plastic had deteriorated over time and so it just failed. They charged me £95 for the repair.
