Discovery LR3 V8 4.4 slugish

Hello folks,

I'm a proud owner of an LR3 2007 V8 4.4 with 250K miles which are very rare in the UK but also very reliable. Recently I have few minor Issues like PDC beeping and not working, remote keyfob not working (not battery issue). Because it is not an HSE I`m thinking to put some electrical leather seats and an Android Head Unit. I will upload pictures of my beast very soon. Now let`s continue with my problem. The car feels a bit sluggish for 300HP and I know it's not a fast car because of its weight but I think is still sluggish for this engine. No error code from transmission or engine. Also, no SparkPlug, MAF, or O2 sensor changed yet (as far as I`m the new owner for the last 2 months). What do you suggest to start and diagnose this missing power from my car?

What are you comparing too when you say it doesn't feel like 300bhp?

Have you driven one before?

You could take it to a four wheel rolling road and do a power run... that should give you an indication of engine condition and potential lost horses.

Compression / leak down testing results could also be helpful but it's a lot of a faff if you are not diagnosing any specific issue.

I'm curious about mine @200k miles it pulls ok on the flat but I get a lot of aggressive downshifting on steep hills.

Good luck and let us know your results.

I`ve driven a lot of cars with 200HP and more also I had petrol land rover before (P38 4.0 and 4.6) which were not more than 210HP but still it seems like in low rpm the car is not as powerful as it should be for 300HP. I`m not saying fast car because Is not meant to be a fast car but a powerful car that pulls very well even on low rpm.

Sorry, MintyHit. What do you mean with four-wheel rolling road and power run, going offroad? When says I get a lot of aggressive downshifting on steep hills are thinking about the gearbox worn out?

...I mean putting the car on a dyno, there are plenty of tuning garages that have them.

They will run the car up to max rpm and calculate power and torque curves and transmission losses.

... Mine tends to shift down to first with a bit of a bang on (very) steep slopes. I'm in the Italian Alps at the moment. I think it's more likely to be transmission ageing then power output but it does make the car feel a bit gutless at times.

Thank you Mint. Very useful information. Can you give me some good advice for any garage with DYNO?

Just type 4x4 Dyno or 4x4 Rolling Road into google maps, there are plenty around London I think.

You just want a basic power run and air / fuel ratio analysis... should give you some clues if you are down on power.

A cheap (free) option would be to run a 0-60mph test and compare it to new spec. 8.2s is a figure I found online, and that’s probably right from my own experience.

While the engine produces 300hp, it is still nearly 3 tons and the engine produces peak HP very high in the rev range, around 5500 rpm, and peak torque at 4000. Personally, I rarely exceed 3000rpm unless I am accelerating uphill.

Make sure you are running 92octane or better gas, that will make a noticeable difference. Other things that will make it sluggish are all terrain or off road style tires and big wheels.

I run mine on 98/99 Octane (Esso). Definitely more spirited on pull-away and mid range acceleration. Better MPG also.

The V8 is a lazy engine but catch it right and it goes. Censored

I would normally flick it across into sport on the auto box and give it the beans. Another option is try the sand mode to see if that changes the gear shifts.

I run on high octane (shell v power) it makes more difference than you might expect.

All I’ve ever used is 95E10, as low price per liter as possible from any station, and haven’t noticed much.. Whistle

be careful when looking for 4x4 Dynos, lots exist but few can take the weight and length of a d3. If you want a power run done I think i'd probably be talking to Gary at Alive tuning as he's had near every Land rove product built on his dyno with the exception of the latest range rovers (as they are too long wheelbase). Although he's a diesel specialist AFR and every thing else is all measurable by someone who knows their behind from the bit between their shoulder and wrist.

Don't forget as well the AJV8 primary focus was always as a sports car engine - it just happens to have become a very good all round engine in 4.4 NA guise, don't be afraid to rev it, it sounds nice for a start (or maybe thats just mine with its "special" exhaust
