Advice please and thank you.
The message "water in fuel" popped in and out intermittently, car running fine. Then message became continuous.
Nanocom results fault code p2269 "water in fuel" and lists as permanent.
Drained about 1500ml from filter, no water in fuel, Dropped and replaced filter. Message water in fuel gone for a day then re appeared
Is there a way to bench test the integrity of the detection unit before I spend the cash on a new one?
Can i confidently suspect the detection unit is at fault seeing there was no water in the filter drain? How sensitive are these things? Does the notation by the Nanocom error as permanent indicate detector failure?
Cheers guru's

The filter and housing is just a bit more to buy than the filter. So just change it and drop it off at the next service. It cured my water in fuel problem

I would replace the sensor on the bottom of the fuel filter. Had the same issue on Jag XF apparently it's a regular failure it was only £23 and fixed the issue

My local guru, who is acknowledged as the best engineer in my area suspects that the "water in fuel" warning is being caused by a contaminated sensor.
I am taking the car in to him on tuesday rectification.
Corrosion on the mounting for the filter causes this error to come up also, hence the suggestion above to change the filter and housing. I sometime get this if I hit a puddle at speed - I've got a new housing in the boot ready to fit next time the car is up in the air. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

What happens if you leave the sensor disconnected? Does the error message go away or do you get another irritating message?Discovery 4 3.0 HSE Lux, 2015

There is no special sensor. The entire red (only for illostration) wire is the sensor. If the insulation is defective at any point in the cable and moisture penetrates, there is an error message: water in the diesel filter. The sensor cable is extremely vulnerable to damage in its environment! Especially at kinks and pinch points!
Because of the damage to the unprotected and cheap sensor cable, I made a highly flexible cable with "sensor". The sensor is a very simple M6 screw. (Don't worry about the cable colours).

Many thanks for the explanation. I must say it seems having a sensor at all is totally pointless and yet another thing to go wrong like a lot of these warning gadgets.Discovery 4 3.0 HSE Lux, 2015

Yes, on the other hand you have to know that the Disco3 has a large tank. If the tank is often run empty, a lot of condensed water collects in the tank due to the sucked-in air. In this respect, the warning lamp on the dashboard is very important!
Emptying the fuel filter is another very big problem. Not all filters work together with the WKW500080 01 and the engine receives fuel mixed with water despite drainage!
It took me a total of about 5 years to eliminate all faulty constructions.

BTW: The shown filter on the picture and the LR drain valve ( WKW500080 01) do not work in combination!!! Use the original LR fuel filter. Or compatible.
