How is the vehicle moved when broken down?
Just bought a new Disco 4 and read the handbook cover to cover. Lots of warnings about towing the vehicle but if the engine won't start and the gear selector knob has not raised it's head the transmission is stuck in Park. So how can the car be moved onto a trailer? The handbook assumes the RAC man will know but what happens if you're off road? Love to know for peice of mind.

They don't break.
You can pull the emergency park break release located under the cup holders next to the epb switch. warning you need to have had your weetabix. SSDD.

On the d3 (and I assume d4 is similar underneath)
Where the park brake is, remove the small plastic cover behind the switch.
Put your finger in and point it towards the D of drive. There is a small plastic thing that you need to push up and you can then move the drive out of Park.Bodsys Brake Bible

And that allows the gear selector rotary control to pop up? I 'll have a go tomorrow if I can see a way of removing it without breaking anything. (This is the first car I've owned without having a Workshop Manual)

dont assume the RAC or AA will know what to do. I broke down couple days ago and had to get recovered. Green flag got the local breakdown rescue company to recover me. I had no electrics so handbrake was "on"
he was going to "get some rollers" into use to get it up on the truck. I had to show him the emergency brake release so we could push the car into line with the recovery ramp........
if I wasnt there I dont know what he really would have done.......

No clear answer how to do this and even with power supplied the thing defaults to park. If you kill the engine in neutral it only stays in neutral for 10 mins before selecting itself back into park. On breakdown if it is able it selects park again.
It is a pretty simple task on the D3 and D4 with the regular autobox due to the release leaver. Had a look at an MY12 and I can find nothing to release as all the connections are electrical. So far it appears applying power is a must but I am slightly surprised that LR have not published a procedure for off-road recovery. It is not as if you can use dolly wheels on a rutted track!

Its a fairly easy task TBH remove the cup holder as you would to access the handbrake release to the front is a big red lever. Lift up the big red lever use a small coin to unlock and then lift and it whilst applying the brake as if the Handbrake is off the car will now free wheel.
Pictures below with central console remove but easily accessible with cup holder removed and the splash guard underneath it removed.
Pull the red cord first

Use a coin to turn the plastic safety lock then pull the red lever and gearbox will be released from park.

Then pull the Handbrake release just to the rear as usual if required. You now have a freewheeling Discovery you can push drag winch etc.Club Forum Criminal !!!

very good question, very well asked, and now an answer, surely this is something that should be in the handbook though. I couldn't even see anything in it about manual handbrake release.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

You would assume though, that the recovery driver would have a jump pack, to put 12v into the system, so you dont need to pull the EPB release, or find the gear selector release
If the car (more has suffered from a dead short in the starter/alternator, it is only a single bolt to isolate the systems, and said jump pack can be used to power the rest of the car with no issues My D3 Build Thread

Thanks Buellbeast I might print this out and put it in the handbook.
Disco_Mikey - remember that the transmission selector knob does not raise itself unless the engine actually starts I.e. switching on the ignition does not raise it ! It's not just a case of "putting 12V into the system"

Rather than trying to solve the electrical issue, I'd be looking for the mechanical solution - skates & dollies.
Enough just to get the vehicle on the back of the wagon and recoverd to the LR dealer I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.
